I'm in W. KY too. Sooooo dry, high 90's tomorrow, been dry all month but Looks like there might be some rain the last couple days of the month! Got seed in the barn but I'm waiting. Figure I have until about mid October for cereal rye, hoping sooner!

Not sure the exact variety of Ladino but I started a Ladino plot last fall that has done very well through this summer under HEAVY HEAVY deer pressure in western KY. Very surprised at how well it has survived the summer heat and 10 to 20 deer in this one acre plot every afternoon. Counted 24...

One last question. When I overseed the cereal rye into the Ladino next month should I mow the clover down and if so how low? If I don't mow the clover I'm guessing it will be 3 to 5 inches when I overseed. Thanks!

That's the plan and my thought that the rye will takes some pressure off the clover , provide some additional winter nutrition when the clover slows down, and help the soil. Frost seed some more Ladino late winter, hit it with Clethodim and 24DB in spring to curb weeds and the rye and then rinse...

I'm going to move forward with overseeding rye into the Ladino. If it turns out to be a disaster for the clover then I guess this time next year I can hook up the tiller to the tractor and start over from scratch. Thanks again for all the input!!

FarmerDan, there are apparently two schools of thought on what's best for perennial clovers LONG TERM . One school of thought follows your thinking in that you should not overseed perennial clovers with rye or wheat beyond the first year. The other school of thought is that you should overseed...

I'd like to buy a drill but they are expensive. The clover is only about 2 to 4 inches high so I'm thinking the rye won't be shaded out if I just broadcast it. I haven't mowed it in a couple months but It get mowed every day!

Not really trying to fix a problem just wondering if perennial clover food plots would benefit from core aerating the same way yards benefit from core aerating. Seems like they would as its one of the best things you can do on an annual basis to your yard.
