Crabapple trees on reclaimed surface mine

I've had a few food plot guys telling me I need gypsum and biochar. I'd love to add that but it's alot of money for hypothetical results. I might add gypsum to a few holes but it's not a priority.

I'm not sure. My area is not exactly farm country. I had a farmer willing, so I took what he had.

Is there anything special about the mulch or any type to avoid?

I watched tractor supply and picked up 6 rolls of wire for $80/ea. Normally they are $125ish. I'm using 5' metal Tposts. I figure I'll have these for the rest of my life and they'll always be used on 80 acres.

Crabapple trees on reclaimed surface mine

This is my first time using blue hill. I had good experience ordering trees last year from cold stream farm and morse. I ordered some red osier dogwood, norways and chestnut bare roots. I left really comfortable ordering the fruit trees because I told blue hill my location, objectives and soil...

Crabapple trees on reclaimed surface mine

I got 3- 1/2 triaxles. I also mixed 4 ton pelletized lime in with my manure spreader. This was done in late August. The only thing I did was drag a spiked chain harrow. The ground was rock solid from lack of rain. The majority was put on the 5 acres where I'm getting the stone crusher in...

Yeah, I tend to go into projects guns blazing. I need to slow down.

Crabapple trees on reclaimed surface mine

Thanks everyone. I owned the property for 1 year. This is a big investment. The guy at blue hill wildlife nursery picked trees out for me. He mentioned about needing a good root stock. This area was mined 17 years ago. I think PA law requires back filling with limestone. I could be wrong but...

When you say fertilizer, are you talking phosphorus and potassium? I was going to add a 1/2cup of each into the hole but my friend who works at a nursery said not to. I have 2 horses and a manure spreader. That'll be to hot to add.

The PH is 5.2-6.2 Organic matter is 3.2-5.6 It's very low in phosphorus and potassium. This was from the soil sample. 3-6" deep. I assume 1-2' will be worse. I was going to add a shovel full compost to each hole. Last year I planted 3 kefier pears that seemed to do ok. They are coming out of the...

Crabapple trees on reclaimed surface mine

I put in an order at Blue Hill nursery for 48 trees. I want to have them start dropping in Sept through winter. I have someone lined up to drill 2x2 holes with a hydraulic auger. depending on how that goes, I'd like to drill 50 more holes for Chestnut trees for next year. I'd like to break...

Crabapple trees on reclaimed surface mine

I have a section of 5 acres on a reclaimed surface mine. The area was reclaimed 17 years ago. I'm on a slight SW slope in Cambria County PA. Spruce and warm season grasses are growing but it's a little rough. I think they started running out of topsoil. I'd like to plant 50 crabapple trees. What...

    Who are you?

I purchased 80 acres a year ago in central PA. 35 acres is part of a surface mine that was reclaimed 15 years ago. 45 acres was recently high graded by the previous owner. I'm looking forward to learning alot from everyone and hopefully I can contribute.
