I'm creating a habitat management reference document for the members of this forum. I need your help first.

Vote to add American Mountain Ash to the list! Just got notification that the 15 I ordered have shipped I've sporadically had a habitat/deer management list on my computer too - helps to keep things somewhat organized

    Tree Planting

I've never trimmed the roots - if they're too long I just open the hole up a bit more, never had any issues but interested to see what others say

    Green Giant Arborvitaes

My parents have arborvitaes at their house in the suburbs and they're bare from 4' down - the deer eat them so they look ridiculous. I guess if you have a lower deer population and more browse for them to eat to stay away from the arborvitae they would be great

    Pochuck Land Tour

It looks like at least one of the two big bucks from last year made it! Turkeys have been in full strut the past month, only 1 more week until the season opens We planted 4 whitetailcrabs crabapples to replace 4 regular apple trees we lost last year, as well as 4 quaking aspen for the...

Wild Turkey population is tanking across most of its range

Glassing for elk in Idaho this past year I had a tree land within 5 feet of me; I was lucky I didn't have my headphones in I heard it starting to pull out of the ground and had time to jump out of the way if I needed to. Never can be too safe in the woods

    Pochuck Land Tour

Got back to Pochuck this past weekend and the wind did a number on this tree-it's about 8-10in in diameter if i remember correctly and the wind snapped it right in half I also got this picture yesterday of some kind of owl on the ground-first time I've caught one on trail camera which was...

    Grafting Bradford pears

Pardon my ignorance but aren't Bradford Pears invasive? Are their fruit any better than normal pears?

    Turkey Strategy

I feel like we always hear about deer hunting strategy: hunt downwind of bedding areas, pinch points, etc etc etc, but we don't often talk about turkey strategy. I've only been able to kill two birds: one by dumb luck in Texas and the other calling in a mid-afternoon Tom that was so fired up...

    Let's See Your Hunting Knives

A little tricky to get to but my guide was able to get them without dealing with most of the guts. If you search it up on youtube there should be videos on how to do it. I'm still going to be doing the standard gut-skin-quarter for whitetail though; the gutless method is only better if you're...

    Let's See Your Hunting Knives

Yea my guide used the "Gutless method" so he skins along the back, takes the backstraps and quarters without having to deal with the guts at all. Very popular in the west but less so in the east
