    Bulk pines planting

I planted 1000 small Norway spruce plugs over a 6-7 acre area. Sprayed it, planted, then let it go. Three years later the trees are growing great. Deer have nibbled a lot of the tops but they keep growing. Couple more years it will be awesome bedding

    Giant Miscanthus

I’ve been interested in this stuff. Does anybody know if it will grow around black walnuts? I’m having a hard time establishing a screen in this area

    White pine and black walnut

Does anybody have any real experience planting these two trees together? I have a stand of black walnuts and was wanting to make some screening in the area with white pine. I’ve read some conflicting information.

    Concolor Firs

Just to add to this about deer sign in and around evergreens. I got this crazy idea about turning my open hayfield into conifers after visiting my friends tree farm. It’s around 100 acres of various conifers of different sizes about 2 miles away. After taking a walk on the farm, I came away...

    Concolor Firs

That’s great to hear. I planted 12 acres in spruces with some white pine, oaks, chestnut, apple, crabapple, pear and a variety of shrubs mixed in. It’s a few years away from becoming something. Im hoping it becomes the best bedding area around. Those are impressive rubs. Looks like there are...

    Concolor Firs

Great! I put in an order for 100 whites spruce today. I’ll mix them in with the Norway’s and see how they do. My property is high elevation and gets pretty windy. These should make for some good bedding areas.

    Concolor Firs

Would white spruce be a better option to mix in with the Norway spruce for cover? I was concerned about needle cast as most of my blue spruce have been wiped out.

    Concolor Firs

Does anybody plant concolor (white) firs for cover? I don’t see much talk about this tree being used outside Christmas trees and was curious why. The neighbor has some 30ft tall and they are full and beautiful trees. I’m considering mixing them into my Norway spruce plantings.

I have no plans, I just bought some wood and started building. The platform is 6’x9’ I believe.

    Mixing apples and pears?

Thanks for the input. The pear varieties I have chosen are supposed to be highly resistant of fire blight. Hopefully that helps that problem. Hoping pollination won’t be a problem. I have roughly 10 pear, 10 apple and 20 crabapple all mixed together.

    Mixing apples and pears?

I’ve been planting a mixed orchard mainly for hunting purposes consisting of apples, crabapples and pears. Most varieties are full size trees, mid and late season and 20’ spacing with a couple semi dwarf on the southern edge. Is it ok to plant these mixed and scattered instead of in rows? I did...

    Elevated blind finished!

This picture shows a little bit of the roof. I just used 2x6s and cut them on an angle so it has about 3” of drop from the center peak to each edge. The windows I purchased from deerview. They are the framed deluxe hinge. I caulked around the outside of window frames so they are sealed. I have...

    Critique my property layout

Unfortunately, that is probably not an option. I have changed the ground usage from ag to tree farm status for tax purposes. I can have food plots and such, but I have to turn in a plan and plant trees also.

    Critique my property layout

You are correct, although after dark, most of the deer come from the NE properties. There is too much pressure to the west and north wood lots. I have all those trees ordered for spring, I like the idea of planting that stuff around the water. What does planting in semi circles do? Just create a...

    Critique my property layout

The stands to the west I meant to say. Access would be perfect. The problem with the property to the west and north is, the guy lives off the land. He and his wife are out walking around, gardening, building things all day. The little bit of woods are wide open and offer almost zero cover. Zero...
