What to do with last year's milo

All of these things can be planted now, or before green up anyway? The Milo was OK. The state wildlife biologist gave me a bag of mixed varieties. I probably got it planted a little late. I didn't see a lot of deer activity around it to be honest.

What to do with last year's milo

I like buckwheat, but it seems like I need to wait until soil temperatures are warm to plant it, and by that time, there's a bunch of weeds that I need to spray. I'd like to find a cycle where I can plant a fall annual (corn, soybeans, milo), then plant something into that over the winter or...

What to do with last year's milo

I have a couple acres of last fall's milo planting. Is there something I can broadcast into it sometime before green up to suppress weed growth? Food value would be a bonus.

What should I do with this Pasture Ground?

I have a compact tractor with a handful of implements including a kasco seeder that I’m not sure I’ve mastered. My main farm (the one I keep instead of flip) is just down the road 10 miles. I can get out there 2-3 times a week. It’s hard to predict - I got this property at a pretty good price...

What should I do with this Pasture Ground?

Beautiful place! That looks amazing. Great work. How did you plant all that (drill, broadcast, etc)?

What should I do with this Pasture Ground?

It makes sense to have this mix. Were you suggesting that you plant both forbs and grasses, or that’s what naturally occurs for you? Have you done some native replanting? Mostly native grasses, or forbs also?

What should I do with this Pasture Ground?

No doubt that big buck pictures sell, but I do like the feeling of leaving it better than I found it. I think burning and spraying would take them out, I just don't know if I'll like what comes back in their place.

What should I do with this Pasture Ground?

That’s what I would hope to happen - broadleaf weeds rather than grasses, but Telemark has a point that it’s hard to know what will come up after scorched earth. I’ve had my local state biologist look at my other property…. Maybe he’d have an educated guess of what to expect. I’ve heard mixed...

What should I do with this Pasture Ground?

Thanks for the info! My priority is habitat over hay income - that would just be a kicker if the it produced the same habitat outcome as burning and spraying. My time horizon is fairly short. I got a good deal on the property, and I want to make the most habitat improvement possible in a...

What should I do with this Pasture Ground?

I'm not super experienced with burns, but I was thinking it would just come back as more cool season grass unless I sprayed that when it's a few inches tall. Do you think I'd get more variety after just a burn?

What should I do with this Pasture Ground?

I picked up a new property. 130 acres in eastern KS - about half is pasture and half is creek bottom. My farmer says this ground isn't great for planting crops due to rocky soil and rolling hills. I plan to put in 5-10 acres of food plots. What would be the best path forward for the pasture...

Which of these processes is best?

Looking good Catscratch - I hope to see that level of results next year. Do you remember your seeding rate for the rye? Are you planning to mow the rye or let it be? I’ve left a detail out so far. I have a Kasco Vari-slice seeder. I wasn’t planning to use it this year for a couple reasons. The...

Which of these processes is best?

Looks like we’re all tied up. I’m glad to see that there isn’t an obvious answer since I’ve gone back and forth in my head….but also disappointed there isn’t an obvious answer.

Which of these processes is best?

I'm in Eastern KS - so 4A I think. Certainly some clay to the soil, but not terrible. Last summer, these areas were mostly fescue. I killed that off with decent success before planting brassicas and clover last fall. Brassicas came up great, but deer didn't eat them much. Clover never...

Which of these processes is best?

Thanks for the votes so far. Slight lead for killing the existing weeds, broadcasting into it, then mowing. I’m curious if people voted for that option because the seed would get better soil contact by broadcasting before mowing or because people prefer not to disc.
