Which of these processes is best?

Looking good Catscratch - I hope to see that level of results next year. Do you remember your seeding rate for the rye? Are you planning to mow the rye or let it be? I’ve left a detail out so far. I have a Kasco Vari-slice seeder. I wasn’t planning to use it this year for a couple reasons. The...

Which of these processes is best?

Looks like we’re all tied up. I’m glad to see that there isn’t an obvious answer since I’ve gone back and forth in my head….but also disappointed there isn’t an obvious answer.

Which of these processes is best?

I'm in Eastern KS - so 4A I think. Certainly some clay to the soil, but not terrible. Last summer, these areas were mostly fescue. I killed that off with decent success before planting brassicas and clover last fall. Brassicas came up great, but deer didn't eat them much. Clover never...

Which of these processes is best?

Thanks for the votes so far. Slight lead for killing the existing weeds, broadcasting into it, then mowing. I’m curious if people voted for that option because the seed would get better soil contact by broadcasting before mowing or because people prefer not to disc.

Which of these processes is best?

I have a couple small food plots that I would like to plant in cereal rye and perennial clover this fall. Currently they have a mix of volunteer brassicas from last year‘s fall plot, and some other weeds. Which of the poll options would give the best results when terminating the existing...

I'm creating a habitat management reference document for the members of this forum. I need your help first.

I was going to start a habitat calendar for myself, but would appreciate the head start if you have it. Were you able to make progress on that part of this project? Are you still planning to publish a link for this spreadsheet?

    How isolated is too isolated

I would imagine other buyers would have similar concerns. Maybe you can get it at a price that would make you comfortable and sell it if it doesn't work out? Three hours from home would be too far for me personally.

    Ag to Grasses

I'm picking up the trees soon, so this is an option. I'll look for other spots for the apple trees to see if that works. Yes - 78 acres if I recall correctly. Interesting idea - Initially I was thinking about having switchgrass along the road, but I think this could be a pain for the farmer...

    Ag to Grasses

Thanks for the replies. I'm certainly not looking to mess up a relationship with the farmer, so I'd be working with him on any changes I'd make. He farms adjacent properties and has a pretty good deal with me now. I agree the drive-through bedding isn't great and I can gain a lot of ground...

    Ag to Grasses

Hi - I have a farmer that farms 15 acres for me. In the attached picture, he's doing 11 acres of bean/corn rotation at the top (yellow), and 3-4 acres of alfalfa in the middle of my property. I'm considering taking back a few acres from the bean/corn rotation to plant some form of native grass...

Considering selling... realistic $$$ evaluation to set price?

Property prices are super localized. In my county, it’s $10k/acre on the east and $5k/ acre on the west, and neither are substantially closer to a metro area. You could start by searching online for currently listed, nearby farms without houses to get an idea of the value of the land, then...

    Vari-slice seeder

It’s about 40 acres with a 50x60 metal building. The previous owner had started finishing half of it. He had it framed and roughed in with about half of the drywall done. Sounded like he had some health issues and moved to town 15 years ago. He just left everything as it was and it all came with...

    Vari-slice seeder

Digging up my own thread here. I bought the place I mentioned above. With that vari-slice seeder, would I still find this single row planter useful? I imagine I could only do corn through a row planter, right? What other crops would be better through that row planter? Could I do soy beans...

    Vari-slice seeder

Thanks guys. There’s a mahendra tractor included as well - looks like it needs a little work. I’ll probably put in an offer today. Wish me luck - looks like a fair amount of work to finish the barndominium project, but it has the best deer cover in the area. I think I can finish the project...

    Vari-slice seeder

I’m considering buying a flip property, and this vari-slice seeder is included. I don’t have a seeder or drill, but I sure would like to have one. Is this one worth much? Do they work well? Would this be better for certain types of seed? Will it work well on ground that hasn’t been tilled...
