That's what I'm leaning towards. SLN says 25 ft spacing on their trees though so it doesn't take long to fill a big area...

Nice videos and good way of documenting progress! That's quite a fence that you put up. I'm debating on doing something similar or building cages around all the trees.
I'm working on clear cutting the future orchard now. It's a race to get it all done before the trees show up for planting...
Same here! The description sounds almost too good to be true. They're $30 for 25 of them through NY state. I think for that price I'll try to get some next year if I don't find any other reasonable sources.
The zone description varies from 3 to 6 depending on where you look so it's possible...
I'm tempted to try the dwarf chinkapins for screening around my orchard. NY state actually has a nursery program and they had bareroots for sale this year but ran out. The nursery I spoke to said they'll produce acorns down to zone 4 and possibly even colder. I'm technically in 5 but if anybody...
Check with your local conservation program if you have one. The ones I'm looking at are only bare root plants but you can get 50 trees for $42. That's a lot of acorns!
The other options they have are pin, red, swamp white and white oaks. I'm not sure which way to go.

I plan on getting Kerr, all winter hangover and winter wildlife next season, SLN is out of stock on those unfortunately. I was able to get the rest of my apple trees ordered though!
Next up is ordering the oak trees. I planned on ordering a bunch of sawtooths through my local conservation...
Once the trees grow up you want 18 ft between them. I did two staggered rows of 6 ft for faster results with plans to cut some down once they start to grow into each other.
If they grow into each other they'll start losing their lower branches.
Where did you get your sawtooths from Apple Junkie? Somebody told me Sawtooths with southern genetics don't bear as well in the north as ones originally from northern states.
That being said they are zone 5 trees so you would think they'd produce something?
Thanks for the link to the pears H20fwler! I think I have a source for everything else now.
I'm looking forward to getting these trees in the ground this spring. In the meantime I'm having fun hinge cutting around the area. Trying to help encourage the deer to visit during the daytime.
Yes small victories along the way would be nice. You're only a couple hours north of me so I would think results should be similar.
I'll add Kerr to next year's list. I couldn't find them for this spring

Okay guys here's my newest latest and greatest spreadsheet! Can you guys help with info on the Chestnut crab and Trailman crab? Are they disease resistant to fire blight and do I have my timing right?
Also looking for a source for kieffer pears. It seems like most of the bigger nurseries don't...
I'll check them out natureboy. Medina is about 2.5 hours from me but I fish up that way on Lake Ontario in the spring time so might work out if they have anything left. Where in the southern tier is your camp? I'm in Corning NY.
Are most of these varieties I want listed with MM111 in the fall...
