Later to Leaf out / later to bloom Apples.

I remember hearing the same, planted my freedom and it has been a wimpy, leaning tree. It’s on an unknown stark rootstock, so I’ve considered grafting it onto something else to see how it does. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Apples, If you were to pick just 3

This is a great thread. 2+ years on, Enterprise and Liberty are still the winners. Goldrush is a delicious, late dropper, but after bearing heavily last year, it is taking this year off, so it can’t be top 3. I have recently planted yates, sundance and grafted wickson and galarina this year...

    Spreading American plum thicket

I planted these in 2022 and if you look close they have started to sucker. I raked around it ti encourage more. I topped one over to a couple known varieties. They grow super fast on established rootstock Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Grafting rootstock that woke up

I’d think grafting just about anything this time of year would be fruitful. I did a couple mulberry and a bradford pear yesterday. I have a few M111 rootstocks in the ground left to go. Never enough time. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Spreading American plum thicket

I’ve heard raking the ground around the outside of the cage will encourage suckering, a technique I’ve yet to try Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Removing stake and Cages what size / age.

I attempted to save the tree with a couple bridge grafts and some pruning sealer. We’ll see what happens Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Removing stake and Cages what size / age.

It was a 4 foot tall cage, I’m not sure on the diameter but it wasn’t big enough. For these smaller cages, I’ve since doubled a few up which should be a better deterrent. Or just leave on the original 5’ tall cage for the life of the tree. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Be wary of going to a little cage. This is a 5 year old kieffer that is probably toast. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
