    Pear from seed question

I stopped Froday and picked up some pears from a roadside tree. Tree is loaded and just starting to drop so it is a fairly late dropping tree. They look similar to a keiffer but no real idea of variety. I could not see any other pears nearby so it’s possibly self fruitful. My question is will...

    What is yourfavorite persimmon?

"Deer Candy" is actually a marketing tool for a collection of early persimmons which includes "Prok", "Morris Burton", and "Yates". Per Chestnut Hill. I believe they are shipped to different parts of the country according to expected hardiness. I witnessed a shipment of "Deer Candy" last spring...

High Grading, Bait, Cams and Crossbows is no good for anyone!

Hey guys, wish I could say that I got him but in reality it was a one time pic from the eve of the last day of our season here in Mi about 10 yrs ago.Back when corn piles were legal and practically expected. Spent the next 9 months planning and dreaming but alas he was never seen again as far as...

    Brassica plots

In my area the usage can vary widely from year to year. Not a ton of ag locally but pockets of beans or corn or grains depending on the weather in spring. Also deer pops can have wild swings. 2 years ago we were seeing 20-30 deer/evening sit. last year only 4-5 per evening or morning . Sure it...

    Brassica plots

Scott, over here in Mecosta co I have generally planted brassicas 2nd week of august, but i am leaning towards a week earlier this year. Going to t&roll last couple of years they seem to start a bit slower and havent had as big of bulbs. Still refining this technique. I have switched to trophy...

    ATV seeder

I use an earthway m20. I suppose it is intended to be rear mounted but no problem front mounting it. I have a fimco sprayer mounted to rear. Allows me to see spread pattern and rate that way but can be a bit messy so i rigged some deflectors out of aluminum coil stock. Holds 50 lbs of lime,fert...

Hybrid Willows: What am I Doing Wrong?

I also planted 25 austree hybrids a couple of years ago. Cuttings i received were disappointingly small but i figured what the heck, they are willows they will root no problem. Followed the included instructions like the op. Turned out to be a very dry summer and had zero survivors. If/when I try...

    Tall plastic pots

I have 100 of these in the 10" deep size. The bonus for me is that I can plant seedlings directly in the ground or 1 gal pots with my plug planting tool

    Collected Acorns yesterday.

I hear ya. last year I had about 2000 acorns and chestnuts between beer fridge and wife's fridge. She wasn't thrilled to give up the space. This year I have cut down considerably.

    Collected Acorns yesterday.

Another thought. You will be amazed at the taproot those oaks will grow and the styro cups just aren't the best for them. I have started using rm-18's or 10" deep plug type starter pots to grow the seedlings. It's a bit of an investment but they get a better start and the taproot doesn't circle...

    Collected Acorns yesterday.

Looking good Buck! I have done it both ways. Much because I am impatient. My experience is that it doesn't seem to make a lot of difference starting in fall vs. late winter, but they grow much more slowly during winter and there is no real difference by next summer in size of the seedlings. So...

    DCO Storage/Stratification vs Vernalization

Last note. I keep them in the crisper drawer of the beer fridge which is set to 28-30 degrees. sometimes they will freeze just slightly but the beer is always perfect and it doesn't seem to hurt the nuts.
