    New Food Plot

Buckwheat this summer and then rye/clover/turnip mix this fall. Repeat next year or if the plot improves enough by next year go whatever route suits your fancy. This is how we have started all our plots in the woods or logged areas we have started. We have done several and had good luck with...

    Holes in my apple tree

They have killed a few of my trees. I started a similar thread 2-3 years ago when I noticed the holes on some of my trees. Basically girdled the trees with holes. 25-30 year old trees, made me sick. I cut the trees off below the damage and topworked one and the other shot up a new leader from...

    Comparing/Contrasting Summer forage/biomass blends

The soybean in my summer release plots grew great. Not pushing their stuff, just relaying my experience with it. I would go with whatever is going to give you the best bang for your buck, there is plenty in both those blends to feed deer.

    Nursing in pots before transplant

I put my grafts into pots in early spring and baby them all summer and then plant into their permanent location in late October or November. No experience going longer than that.

    Zone 3 midwinter frost seeding?

Conditions were perfect this weekend here. I did 2 small 1/2 acre plots to clover this morning. I usually frost seed toward the end of February but the groundhog said spring was coming early this year so I said what the hell.

    Zone 3 midwinter frost seeding?

If conditions are going to be perfect, the seed will get worked into the soil and be there until it germinates in the spring. A couple extra weeks in the dirt isn’t going to hurt it. Lots of guys put seed on top of the snow fairly early.

    Summer plot soil builder

I plant rye as a nurse crop for my fall planted clover plots and they go in August 15 ideally. Deer are in them the same as my straight rye plots that I planted on Labor Day. I just started planting them all whene I can get them in between August 15 and Labor Day in zone 5 on the western NY and...

    2024 Scion Exchange

Happy to pass it forward. I remember how hard it was to get certain varieties when this started. I went 2-3 years where I wanted a Kerr tree in a bad way or scion and it was like finding a needle in a haystack. Pretty easy to find Kerr trees or scion now, good time to be starting a wildlife...

    Summer plot soil builder

Buckwheat is a good one and you could probably get two crops out of it before planting rye into it for the fall. Only issue may be if you have have high deer numbers that may hammer it. I have a similar plot that I have been nursing along and that was the rotation I used to start.

    2024 Scion Exchange

It has progressively gotten less activity every year since it started. There are a lot more places for scion out there now and I think most of us who were doing a lot of the trading have a lot of trees we were looking for. The other issue is many of us are running out of places to put new trees😄.

    Root Maker pots and Grafting

Your basement would be perfect. My garage is detached and unheated. It has been a bit warm some years but I don’t think it ever got cold enough to freeze inside the garage when I have had my grafts in there. It is usually late march or early April. If I thought they might really freeze I would...

    Root Maker pots and Grafting

If you are asking about bench grafted rootstock, after Bench grafting my rootstock I put them in damp sawdust in a bucket in a dark corner of my garage for about 2 weeks. About then some of them are starting to break buds and I then plant them in my root maker pots for the summer. I transplant...

    2024 Scion Exchange

Not much activity on this thread. I am looking for a couple Winter Wildlife scion if anyone has some they could spare. Only doing a few grafts this year but this is one I would like a few more of. Mine are very small still and won’t have any usable scion. I should have scion of the following if...
