    Chief River Nursery

I've ordered several times, the quality of trees seems to keep dropping every year though. Last year was probably my last, the bare root birch trees came leafed out already and nothing covering the roots. I called with my displeasure but it seemed to fall on deaf ears, most of the trees died.

    Potted trees in freezing temps?

I bought a dozen 3 gallon white spruce trees and was only able to get 6 in the ground because part of my property is still frozen. So I left them where I want to them to be planted but now the temps are going back to freezing with lows in the lower teens and highs only in the mid thirties...

Landscape fabric for new fruit trees?

Thanks! The food plot I'm changing over is not much help and takes a ton of effort. Between tilling and planting twice a year, fencing and taking the fence down, plus it turns into bare dirt in 2 weeks after the fence comes down so the draw quickly goes away. II was hoping to plant, weed mat...

Landscape fabric for new fruit trees?

That was a great video for a guy just learning about fruit trees like me.

Landscape fabric for new fruit trees?

Thanks for the reply. Less competition for water was my thought as well, all the trees I matted were bare root trees that were in the ground for 3 months-1 year. I'd say they were between 3-5 feet tall at the time. The birch all dropped the leaves then sprouted new smaller leaves from the...

Landscape fabric for new fruit trees?

I'm in 4b. I bought from a vendor I saw recommended on this sight, Midwest Deer Trees and everything I bought is good for a zone 3-8. Last year I went through and put weed mat on a bunch existing conifers and hardwoods, It may have been a coincidence but all the conifers and burr oaks did...

Landscape fabric for new fruit trees?

I'm changing out a tiny food plot to more of a deer orchard this spring, it's only about the size of a small city lot. I already have 4 apple trees I planted a few years ago along side the plot but now I'm going to be adding 5 crabs and another 2 apple trees. I plan on caging them and...

    Water hole/tank and freezing temps

Actually I've read and seen several videos that say to put mud and sand in the bottom so the water is more natural tasting to them. Not sure if it's true or not but I left sand and several shovels of dirt in mine, deer really hit it hard all summer and fall. In fact I'm still getting pictures...

    Water hole/tank and freezing temps

Thanks for the replies, yes it's a regular stock tank dug into the ground. It will for sure freeze solid, but it seemed to be tough enough.

    Water hole/tank and freezing temps

Hello, I added a 110 gallon stock tank and it's been a magnet for deer and bear since but now it's getting colder. It's a 110 gallon plastic stock tank from Tractor Supply, I'm wondering if I can just leave it to freeze or should I pump most of the water out before freeze up. Thanks for the...

    Lithium camera batteries AA. Ouch!!

I usually get my lithium batteries from Menards as well, no problems so far. Are your cameras Browning by chance? I had to replace a few stolen cams this year and 2 of my new Dark Ops cams will run fine until I change the card. When I change the card it appears dead, but if I eject the...

Spruce & pine chipping for mulching trees

Thanks for the replies! They are fresh chipping from trees that were alive, that's why I was concerned.

Spruce & pine chipping for mulching trees

We had a bunch of ice storm damage this year and we rented a large chipper to clean up some of the brush. Is it OK to use those chippings for mulch on my other tress I planted over the last few years? Should I just use it for other conifers or is it alright on poplars and maples as well? I...
