    Anyone grafting?

I did mulberries April 12th and 13th (near Cincinnati) two years ago and had good luck. Persimmons I did May 14th and late May last year. In the past I did early May. I did real well with the ones in the yard, not so good at a distant property. I wasnt able to pinch back buds as much as I...

    Anyone grafting?

I've done pears and apples earlier and had 100% takes out of about 25 grafts. It's not going to hurt to wait though. You'll have a better chance of avoiding damaging frosts.

    Anyone grafting?

Apples and pears are more forgiving with cold temperatures. The problem you might encounter is if you graft, the graft begins to leaf out and there's a hard frost that kills the new foliage. The grafts may not sprout new buds. I've usually waited until about the time when flowers start to open...

Black Mulberry & Home Orchard Pear Varieties

The mulberry from Chesnut Hill/Walmart died back and didnt grow much after that. Last i checked, it looked dead. I'll have to check it again when Spring comes. I'm hoping maybe it resprouts from lower on the trunk but Im not hopeful. I grafted some alba/hybrid rootstocks with a few different...

    Callery top worked to ?

I've planted numerous pears on Ohx97 rootstock. When I moved, there was a large collection of callery pears in the back yard. They ranged from an inch to 6 or 8 inches in diameter. I had no issues grafting European or Asian pears to them. I did bark grafts on the large trees and cleft grafts on...

    Dr Deer Pear

I haven't monitored blooming on all of them but it seems to bloom about a week or two earlier than most other pears.

    Dr Deer Pear

You confirmed my suspicions that it's prone to frosts. Are those golf ball size Pears? I like the idea of smaller Pears that are harder for coons to run off with but seems to be unreliable with fruiting in my location.

    Dr Deer Pear

Yeah, let us know how it turns out. The first crop on mine had pears about the size of a thumbnail. Since nothing ate it and I presume the last two years the blooms froze, it had me debating wanting to graft it over to another variety.

    Dr Deer Pear

I have Dr. Deer Pear. It produced first time I think 3 years ago. The fruits were really small at that time. It hung on the tree into January, which surprised me nothing ate it by then. They were mushy and flavorless (I sampled one) at that time. The next two years I've had no fruit. I've read...

Dead Deer in Pond and Killing Black Locust

I wasn't sure how this would do on somewhat larger ones I hadn't cut. It seems to have worked!

Dead Deer in Pond and Killing Black Locust

I'll likely give that a try at some point on the bigger ones. If it doesn't resprout from the roots, that's the way to go. Otherwise it becomes an even bigger problem.

Dead Deer in Pond and Killing Black Locust

I've tried Gly at 20% to cut stumps in other areas. It generally does well with a number of species but not black locust. Treatment 1 was cut stump and 25% Garlon 4 and 75% diesel. Treatment 2 was cut again the following year and the same mix. Always applied within 10 minutes or less of...

Anybody happy with their fruit tree population?

I'm in maintenance mode. I likely won't add much more other than to graft persimmon rootstock and a couple pears where the graft appears to have failed at some point and the rootstock taken over. I planted mine in numerous locations. It makes maintaining them harder. Who knows, I may change my...

Dead Deer in Pond and Killing Black Locust

I wanted to provide an update on my problem with black locust. In the past I haven't had much issue with applying Glyphosate to most cut stumps. The only things I noticed bounced back from using Gly is black locust (honey locust was usually killed) and osage orange. I later tried cutting the...

    Menards rebate program

I went to Menards today. There was a medium-sized dog in the cart of the couple in front of me. Menards is almost always cheaper than Home Depot here. The rebate has an expiration date to mail it but they've accepted numerous rebates I mailed in late. I'm not aware that they can be completed...
