AG guys - Rye for market?

Wheat is a better crop. There is a market for Rye in NY. Lots of demand for seed from organic folks, also NY has a tax rap for distilleries. MY favorite bread is rye, or sourdough with a bit of mashed potato in the batter. Its an eastern European cheat to make lesser grains taste better in...

    Bluehill 2025

Next week is kind of a wierd week. Maybe 1/3-1/2" of rain this weekend and mediocre temp / cloudy days for most of the week. Trying to water less than I used to. Many days spending over a hour dragging the 300ft of 3/4" hose around. Got now about 8 1st years trees, 1/2 bareroot 1/2 grafted...

    Bluehill 2025

Been all rain here. Coworker ordered some trees with my order. 2 of his are doing ok, an enterprie on M111 isn't putting on much weight. He made a small mound for the 2 trees, but not for the enterprise. Bugs been a bit easy this year. It might be me hitting them with malathion mid may. I...

Since I have a trailer now, I have been taking a huge igloo marine 110qt or so cooler. I have almost a whole standup freezer shelf full of frozen water bottles. I put the water bottles in a freezer bag then in the cooler, and cover the cooler with a white blanket and some of that reflective...

    Plot Advice

cowpeas or buckweheat...... Watch the weeds, let them provide nutrients. Kill them before they make viable seed. Thats my overall summer plan at camp. My old enemy, now my friend is golden rod. Letthe plot do what it does best, then steer it cold season grass time. Clover sit in the...

    Sedge Control

Drying out the roots via tillage is a control method, not erradication. Killing the leaves, then whacking them again when they are new fesh and weak is another control method. IT is like pigweed, smartweed, and other tough weeds. Enjoy the battles won, for the war will never be won. Sedge...

Seen numerous bears. never pulled a trigger but once. Bear was messing with my trash can too many times in one month. Took some #8 shot and aimed it before his feet. Last time I saw that bear. Kind of got an indiian philosophy. IF I am not going to appreciate all the offering, I will not...

Glad to see you back on the forum. Grafted buckman and courthouse. Glad you found those varieties and sent some scions over the years. I parked some extra courthouse on a mature tree a few months ago. Little guy is putting fruit on the scion.

    Sedge Control

IS it all over, or can be spot treated? If it grows taller than the clover, you can get a weed wiper to help selectively control it. mix of gly and 2,4D during the summer may kill it. Weed wipers take heavy doses of chemicals like 1/ water 1/2 gly.

    Sedge Control

Basagran / bentazon is one of the earlier methods. Sedge hammer / sedge max is a bit newer way to handle it. 2,4 D and gly will hit it really hard, but kill everything else pretty much. Sedge will be a continuous fight. Whacking it with gly sets is back annually. Lightly discing the...

    buckwheat / rye timing

Going to let it go to maturity. I have alot of work to do around the house this summer / fall. I am thinking of not hunting until late rifle or muzzleloading in December. Make some noise fixing up the garage and shed. Daikon is a good late november / december crop. However, the place...

    Plot Advice

Look at green covers website. They have just about every summer plot option over there. Some foodplot weeds can be controlled decently with mowing, not sure about thistle. A weed wiper is an option too. Spreads roundup on what it touches. Hits the high weeds and leaves the desired down...

    Post Timber Harvest Management

I do about 8ft daimeter brush piles maybe 2ft tall or so. I have seen predator in large ones before. Grouse love downed trees. Add a bit of brush to one. Skidsteer is just fien for what you need to do. Point the bucket down at a 20 or 30 deg angle and backdrag to make a seedbed for rye or...

    Japanese beetles invasion!!

Anybody dealing with Beetles yet? I sprayed last time mid may when the caterpillars were small. I have aphids on trees, but not a bad outbreak. Insects have been too quiet........ They make granular sevin for grub control. Debated using it or not. Beetles do travel, but find a nic cozy...
