.....You might be a habitat guy

Those look like live oak acorns

If so, they will sprout anywhere and everywhere

TreeDaddy, I've got huge old live oaks in my yard that drop acorns that look IDENTICAL to the ones I'm gathering under parking-lot trees in town... and the trees in town have what appear to be identical leaves, bark, and similar form... BUT many of the trees in town are much smaller / guessing about 30 foot height and with diameters of about 10" versus yards wide like with the ancient oaks. That, and the trees in town are planted in lots where I can't see them ever wanting giant live oaks with spacing closer than one would do for giant live oaks as well. Can't help but wonder if they're a variant but haven't had any luck finding someone that knows, though I've asked a few friends.

Related note, went through the first gathering quickly feeding deer while waiting for hogs to return... so spent this weekend making a hail-Mary attempt to REALLY STOCK UP. Best guess is gathered about 140 gallons...

Was sitting at the kitchen table last night pouring over handwritten notes/maps an various info. Lady asks me what I am doing cause she wanted to start the movie.

Replied "getting plans in place for spring planting"

She said, "thought you had evertyhing already ordered."

To which i replied, " I do, this is for spring of 2020"

Needless to say I closed my portfolio and moved to the couch.

Spring cant get here fast enough.

Hillfarm,

we are kindred spirits

I plant baby trees every free weekend from november through march

I stop long enough put wife and kids in stands or to field dress their kills

TreeDaddy,

Thanks I am happy I found a kindred spirit and this site. I'm glad I'm not alone and have found others with the same passion for habitat.

When you spend 10 minutes admiring these radishes at the supermarket with no intentions of buying them and then snap a photo for the guys on this site.

And then you spend 10 minutes admiring radishes that another took a picture of...at a market haha!

You might be a habitat guy, if:
you've taken on a second job... Just to pay for your habitat addiction.
your kids ask if you are taking them on a tour of the local (and historic) college campus to collect acorns again this year.
if your child who moved out of the houses room becomes a "grow room" for cuttings, chestnuts and acorns.
if you have to ensure your boss and coworkers that pictures of your "grow room" really isn't for marijuana.
if your wife and family learn to live your addiction.
growth pictures are often more about the plants, than your children who are also in the picture.
if you haven't made a post here in a year or so, and immediately feel at home after coming back...

.... if you buy a property that's overgrown pasture covered in invasive rose bushes and instead of cutting them all out and mowing them like all the neighbors you plant trees among the canes that act as a natural deer fence once you notice all the native trees that grow this way survive browsing pressure, but the ones growing out in the open look like bonsai trees from overbrowsing.

similar to above, if you have a swath of multiflora rose that's working as a feathered edge thru an old pasture field, and you consider putting triple 19 on it to get that hedge going quicker.

Yes, if you're actively managing whitetail habitat FOR multiflora rose in a pasture field... you may be a habitat guy.

If in July you drive thru your hinge cutting mess from February and March and silently hope you never have to track a deer thru that mess...

If you consider this June a successful month (like overall, and in general, not just deer and habitat wise) because you found a new mineral site to get summer pictures based off of what the neighboring farm planted this spring.

You owe your wife a night out, but you make plans to spray food plots and plant food plots, then fit her in next (she doesn't know that's the order)

Not quite the truck bed load I shared above in post #65, but you might be a habitat guy when... instead of ordering food from Macky D's while your daughter takes a piano lesson next door you're kneeling on the ground in front of their sign at one of the busiest intersections in town picking up acorns from an oak that's still dropping viable acorns in early February!

In all seriousness, while believing them to be of a red oak variety anybody able to confirm and / or point to a particular oak species? Super late dropper for sure and interestingly the acorns from this tree looked to be about a month of so behind a row of like trees behind it. Would only add you REALLY might be a habitat guy when you've planted all the oaks you possibly can but STILL can't resist picking up viable acorns.
