Wolf or Yote?

Tree Spud

5 year old buck +
Have seen some very large tracks in this area and we know there is at least one wolf that is local here. Would like your thoughts on ID whether this is a coyote or wolf?

Same. It looks like it has long legs so I am leaning towards wolf.

Spud...do have any other pics from that camera of other critters for size comparison?

Trees Spud. The animal in your picture appears to have a different attitude than the coyotes here in New York. The coyotes here generally show an immediate reaction to a nighttime flash so close to them whereas the animal in your picture is showing no reaction whatsoever. Supposedly we do not have wolves like what are in your area. Thus this picture taken here shown below presumably shows an eastern coyote. It looks to be not so lanky as the animal in your picture.

I went through my trail pics and came up with one that is positioned somewhat similar to yours. Mine is definitely a coyote. I'm not sure that it sheds light on yours, but I will vote 'yote because it rhymes. But the legs, ears, and snout do appear to be...lankier? That might be the effect of winter and a lack of food though.

yote vote from me as well.

The reason I am still on the fence is his body size. I have seen yotes in the same spot and they look smaller.

Keep the feedback coming, all good stuff.

My first reaction is yote, due to the long snout.

I've gotten some pretty big yotes this year. Hard to tell from a picture but wolves are HUGE. My vote is Yote all day long.

Long skinny nose and pointy ears?

If you’ve already made up your mind, why pose the question?

The Wisconsin Timberwolve packs are a rather large breed. They are pretty distinct when you see one, you know. I had 2 coming into my stand a few years ago, they were all of waist high.

That was a question asking what were the identifying characteristics you used to make your ID.

I'd say coyote as well. Much too small to be a wolf.

Yote. Agree when you see a wolf you will think damn that's tall with a lot of leg. Dont know about snout and ears and all that stuff but when seeing one cross a road from a long way off that was my first impression

I have only seen wolves in their raw fur state at the old Hudson Bay Fur auctions. They were huge compared to western coyote hides. However our coyotes from from as small 25lbs to larger 55 lbs. so I imagine there are small wolves and larger wolves as well. Thus looking at attitude and body shape may be more telling than size alone.

When I get pictures of a wolf, my first thought is, "Whoa! That's a wolf!" Every time I look at a picture from one of my cameras and question if it's a wolf or coyote, it turns out to be a co
