Wil plums looking good.

ruskbucks

5 year old buck +
I think I planted these wild plum 3 years ago.(maybe 4). This is the first year they have fruit and they are really throwing it out. I hope they stay looking this good. I have not had any luck getting any edible plums in the past.

Very cool, that’s some awesome growth. I’ve planted several and they have seemed to grow in slow motion. I’m planning to order some scion and topwork some of my stubs next spring.

What were the size of the plums that you planted 3 years ago?

I have been planting wild or american plums the last two years. They were bare root seedlings but have been putting on a few feet each year. I have had decent luck with tree tubes and have been very impressed with the plum's growth in their first year or two.

I just planted some this year. They all leafed out very well, for my crappy soil. I think I only have one DOA out of 25.

Great trees Rusk! I am curious if you have a similar experience as I had so I look forward to the end results in the fall bud.
I am with Hoyt, I planted 25 American Plumb and 25 Beach Plumb from the DEC for wildlife purposes 4 years ago. They were tiny when planted and are a crawl, walk, run tree for me and are now only 3 feet tall, the ones I put tree tubes on leafed out a few weeks earlier and are closer to 5 feet tall compared to those without tubes, but they are tall and lanky. Those without tubes are shorter and bushier so if I were to measure every branch I would guess they have put on equal growth but break most of the horizontal branches over winter, I assume from the weight of snow packing down over the winter.
Conversely I planted 2 Methley Plumb and 2 Ozark Plumb (my last and final purchase from StarkBros) in my yard 5 years ago and they put on tremendous growth every year. They had a crazy amount of flowers and I have had plumbs the last 2 years on them, but... something keeps taking them off the tree as they grow. I start with trees that look like yours but I end up with only a handful by the time they are ripe enough to eat :( The good news is they are friggin DELICIOUS!!

Yours look great!
I’m trying them again next spring, last two times I spaced to far and didn’t protect..they are struggling.
Next spring I’m going to plant a little grove at each farm and fence.

That's what I did. I wasn't sure if I planted them right but I planted all mine in bunches of 5 in about a 5' diameter fence. Wasn't sure if that was too close or not.

Awesome! How big / wide are they getting? Are they sending up many suckers yet?

The ones in the pic are about 6 ft tall and about 4-5 ft wide. I have a few that are close to 10 ft tall next to these. Last year they had a few plums but they never grew bigger than a grape and then they were gone. This year they had a lot of flowers but we got a bad frost and now they have no fruit. The smaller plum were not flowering yet and are full of fruit. The 10ft plums are probably 6 years in the ground. I bought the biggest they had, not sure if they were 2-2? They were all over 2 ft when I planted.

I ordered mine from paint creek nursery, and they were the biggest size they had, maybe 2-2, all the trees looked great and were 2ft plus. They have put on close to 2 ft a year. I stopped using tubes. The ones with tubes grew fast straight up and the trunk could barley hold it up. With out tubes they spread out and are nice solid trees.

Yes they suckered like crazy without any help or from pits. I tried digging up and transplanting 3 of them, but they all failed.

Looks like all my plums got zapped by late frosts. Even had more bloom this yr as some brushy areas choked with prickly ash got thinned last winter and a few new discoveries in fence line were found but all for naught. The crabapples following up a week or two later were fine and decent fruit set on most.

Rusk - Are these American or Chickasaw plums?

Really happy with the plums I got from Missouri Department of Conservation. It's supposed to be a mixture that could include American plum, American wild plum, sandhill plum, Osage plum, river plum, sand cherry, thorn plum, wild yellow plum, red plum, August plum, goose plum, hog plum, and sloe.

They've been growing very well for the first year. I believe I only lost 1 out of 25.

When so plums drop? Wondering when the food is available for deer? From what I'm reading they ripen late summer, but can't find any detailed information? Do they hold on until mid September or later?

This is a picture from September 4th. They started dropping about a week earlier. I want to say that it was only about a 3 week window and they were all gone off the tree and the ground. I'm not sure what was all eating them, but it was matted down heavy all around the trees.

Thank you! That means there may be some left around bow opener here, depending on the year

Mine still look green,They are very particular on soil.I planted a row and they are 15 ft tall in good dirt and shrink down to 3 ft tall the sandier it got.
