No direct experience but just a few days ago was reading an article of a family that has been involved with forestry over many decades. Been planting since 1975 with black walnut the preferred variety and using red pine, white pine, and tamarack as trainers for the walnut. Fella worked as a DNR forester for over 30 years before retiring so you would think he knows a few things and that "trainers" are usually planted every other row not to far away so juglone must not kill them. However assume the goal was to grow walnut really well and how slow or whatever growth the pine got was not a factor. Hopefully someone else has more direct experience for you.
