Spotted this the other day...looks a little past. Is it hen of the woods?

looks like wood ears to me, definitely not a hen.
 
Yep, definitely woods ears, or "jellys". Good in soups as a flavoring or thickening agent. These are a little past prime.

Agreed. Wood ears past their prime.
 
My buddy Todd regularly makes a mushroom stock with wood ears in a crockpot. It reminds me very much of some of the gelatinous soup bases found in Asian cuisine. I think you could make a tasty hot and sour soup starting this way.

It is very common in Asian cooking. I buy it bulk in Vietnam when I'm there.
