What bullets do you use?

I got a .45 cal smokeless muzzleloader this year. They are not available right now but should be soon. I'm planning to hunt with 275 gr Pittman AccuMax bullets. Here are the specs:

  • 275 Grain Weight
  • .452" Diameter
  • .021" Thick, Custom Made Copper Jackets
  • 1.205" Length
  • Solid Lead Cores
  • Precision Machined Aircraft Grade Aluminum Tips
  • Securely Packaged In Quantities Of 25, 50 or 100
  • Sectional Density .192
  • Estimated Ballistic Coefficient .300 G1
Thanks,

Jack

That's a heavy bullet, jack... Hunting anything other than deer with it?

My blackpowder i've had nothing but pass thrus with 200 gr out of a .50 cal.

I'm no expert, but I'd think with the smokeless, you could totally get away with a lighter load.
What powder?

Not yet. Maybe after retirement. The load was recommended by Jeff who sold me the barrel for the TC. His recommended load is 65 grains of IMR 4198 with these 275 grain bullets. I'm a complete novice at smokeless, so I figured it was best to start with Jeff's recommendation. These bullets have a good BC, and they are supposed to be accurate with this barrel to about 300 yards. That is further than I've every shot with .300 win mag, so I don't see the heavier bullet as a big detriment.

My personal blackpowder muzzleloader range is about 100 yards or so. I'm just three 50 gr White Hot pellets with it. My biggest issue is not seeing deer run after the shot because of the smoke.

After I get the first hunting season under my belt and after I retire, I'll probably mess with loads. As long as Jeff's recommended load is accurate for me, it will be much better than I have now.

Thanks,

Jack

Over the past 50 years I have taken game with just about every bullet mentioned . Nosler partition used to be my favorite in bolt action with Sierra Game king close behind . For 6.8 AR nosler AB and Federal Fusions work great . Last few years I have shot nothing but Cavity Back Bullets in any of my rifles and nothing I've ever tried beats them as far as accuracy and performance. If they ever build a pistol round I will switch to them in pistol also .
