Weed Killing Spray

Has anyone here used a mixture of vinegar and salt for weed killing? I've got a couple apple trees that are two years old and I never put down a weed barrier. Well the weeds are doing as well as the trees and I'd like to spray to kill the weeds without harming the trees.

I've read vinegar and salt will kill weeds, but I don't know if it will affect the tree roots.

It's only two trees so I don't want to go buying a bunch of herbicide mix that won't get used up.

If it were me... I would pull the weeds by hand to get rid of the tall stuff then spray some gly on what comes up later. Make sure there are no root suckers. I've never used the vinegar and salt thing but don't imagine adding as acid to the soil is advantageous.

Some salt will kill your weeds as well as your apple trees without the vinegar. Isopropylamine salt of glyphosate is one example. :emoji_thinking:

Ancient Romans and Greeks (and probably everyone else) used salt on their enemy's fields kill everything forever. Most plants cannot tolerate salt. It's also as nasty mean trick to play on the neighbor you don't like. I'd rather shoot him than harm his apple trees.

Maybe pull the weeds and put the barrier on. Or just put the barrier in place. Or if in a remote location where you don’t care how it looks, put down 2-3 layers of cardboard with rocks or chunks of wood on top to hold them down. Lack of sunlight from the barrier or cardboard will suppress the weeds.

Put mulch on top of barrier or cardboard if you wish.

Depending on the weeds, you could use a selective grass killer spray such as Clethodium. But for just a couple trees, pull it by hand.

Salt will kill your apple trees. Vinegar, if used during a period of sunny weather without rain will burn down the tops of the weeds but will most likely not kill the roots.

Vinegar with salt is useful on pavers or gravel, but not a good idea around trees.
