Any of you guys own any weather stations? I have a beat up rain gage, my thermometer accuracy is in question, and my "wind indicator" (a strip of a plastic shopping bag shows wind very well) gets constantly tore down by squirrels or birds for nesting.
I really like paying attention to rain amounts, wind, etc. Anyone out there using something like this?

I actually have that very unit. I have had several, Lacrosse, Accu-rite, and another brand I can't remember that all failed. I have only had the Ambient one for about 9 months. So far so good, other than I think the rain gauge is not accurate. My initial impression is that the Ambient is the best of the bunch I've had. I bought it because one of the guys I work with has the same one and he recommended it. He is a weather nerd, ex-storm chaser kind of guy.

Thanks. $169...Not sure I want to spend it. I've been living okay without a weather station. Been spending way too much money on doctor and emergency room co-pays. Maybe I'll spend the cash on another trail cam, instead.

I know what you're saying. I've had one for at least 10 years, I can't be without one anymore. It's nice when you get up in the cold and dark, and can stand in your closed and see the wind direction and speed to plan your hunt and how you dress!

I hear ya. I really do want one, just trying to prioritize my spending. So many toys to buy.
How was that unit to set-up? Any WIFI difficulties or anything else? I'm not exactly a geek.
How man hours of direct sun does the solar panel need? I have a lot of shade. I have a couple close areas that get a few hours of sun but most of my sunniest areas are over 100 feet from the house.

It's simple to set up. I can access it from anywhere with an app on my phone, kind of cool. I'm in full sun, so not sure how much it needs to keep going, but I will say that this one has the best range from unit to the base of any of the ones I've owned. I haven't measured, and I don't have mine that far, but I tested it and it would make it 100' in my environment.

I’m looking into getting weather station for our farm that is 30 miles away from where we live. I know this thread was started a year and a half ago. I’m leaning towards the aforementioned Ambient brand. Is it still working for you @swat1018? Any other opinions out there?

Yep, mine is still going strong.

I don't have anything that fancy. Wind doesn't tell me much. From a hunting standpoint, I'm in rolling country so wind currents can be different 50 yards away. The local weather station provides general wind direction and speed which is just as good for my purposes as a weather station on site could provide. I don't bother with rain gauges. I found this to be quite accurate for me in terms of rain: https://water.weather.gov/precip/

I use the inexpensive Acurite temperature an humidity sensors. I mostly use them at home where I grow trees from seed. I've got a room in the basement that I use as a cold room in the winter. I seal it off and shut off the heating vents. I then open a window. In my climate, 95% of the time the room temperature is good enough to over winter trees. I hang a sensor in there. In my enclosed grow rooms under lights, I put sensors, as well as the open grow areas in the basement. I also put one on my deck. Acurite sells a network device (can't recall the latest name). It basically accepts wireless readings from the sensors and sends them to the Acurite site. That site allows me to graph them and lets me set alarms levels and sends me emails when an alarm is triggered. That lets me know if things get below freezing in the cold room and I then close the window some.

My stuff has been running for years. Most of the sensors I got came with local monitors as well that also grab the temp and humidity and display it. They are convenient when my wife says "how cold or hot is it outside?" when getting ready for the day. I can't speak to the more sophisticated sensors like rain and wind that have a mechanical component.

Thanks,

Jack

We got one of the $260-ish range weather stations a few years ago.
It was a Christmas gift for our son, who was absolutely OBSESSED with weather and radar data for 6-7 years. It connects to our WiFi and auto-reports to weather underground so I can check it from anywhere.

I’m a year or two away from replacing the sprinkler system controller for one of the newer ones that will pull forecasting, rainfall, and temp data off our personal station to decide when and how long to water. That was a decent justification for me to spend a bit more than I would have otherwise.

Thanks everyone. Excellent feedback. We decided to go with the Ambient brand. Now, to decide where to put it!
