Waterfowl

H20, we've been beating down the mallards, with plenty of spoonies and GW teal around.
It has been a good spoony year, we have gotten into them good a couple times this season. Got two dirty drakes over the weekend.
We always try and shoot our “other” birds whenever we get the chance here locally. Spoonies are at the top of the list.

We just got another push of new birds, three more weeks for us here with the ducks then the long wait till next fall.

I hear ya. Hard to get more than a mallard limit sometimes, not a big fan of spoonies, but I'll take the bonus ducks anytime. I prefer the teal, I killed a blue wing weekend before last, as well as the GWT.

Season opens for me this Sunday. Been seeing them and hearing them. Got some new holes to explore this year so exciting times!

Been a lot of redheads and bluebills around lately too hunting over water.
Field hunting is where we pound on the mallards the most, we always look flocks over hard for a black or gaddy or pin in with them.

That's awesome.
We have an old trophy we pass around to whoever shoots the first spoonie of the season. That and he has to buy the first 12pack.

H20, I've been hunting pretty close to the OH line in Geneva last few weekends.

Unfortunately I lost access to my best hole after last season. The owner got married and his stepson's will be hunting it now. All I have left is public land and one other swamp if I happen to get invited to go. We open back up Sunday and go through the end of January.

@WeedyJ - let me know if you need some company or want to tag along with me on some public land hunts.

Fast windy hunt today.

Oldest son got a band, youngest shot what I think is like a second or third gen mallard/black...mallard with a black duck grandparent or great grandparent. Very dark dusky drake mallard.

My son and I went to some public land to do a little fishing then to check a few areas. We saw two woodies while fishing then drove by some of the ponds and saw a plethora of tire tracks entering the areas so everyone else had already been in scouting the birds. Decided to sleep in this morning and avoid the rush of the our second opener.

In that last photo, lot's of folks would probably find both those drakes worthy of taxidermy work; bird on the wing, carrying bling will give them a zing! Congrats to all of you; obviously, you have developed a honey hole.

That was the first time hunting that property.
It is a actually owned by the guy that dug our pond.

I kind of just fell into getting the place to hunt for us.
Owner actually asked me to hunt geese on it for him and we ended up with exclusive permission.
When it has sheet water on it the birds seem to really like it, it’s a great traffic field.

Just the pup and I this morning for a short hunt, very sunny today so it shut down fast.
We started on some sheet water then jumped a pond. Turned out pretty good and the dog did great….her with big geese always makes me laugh.

Logan got invited to the swamp this morning. Only a couple ducks came in range and he got one of them. Lots of geese, but nothing in range. GA waterfowl hunting is slow sometimes.

That looks like an old band. How old?

That is what I thought too, only four years old though. It was really worn and thin couple numbers were hard to read.

Fooled me.

Public land bird this morning. Controlled myself and didn't shoot the hen.

Beautiful drake!
