Uw madison Aldo Leopold class

Looks like this might be an avenue to understanding your deer management

The overall goal of this course is to engage you in learning about how wildlife management and recreational hunting play a role in the evolving face of conservation.

Together we will look at the emerging face of hunting today and the modern models of conservation. In doing so, the importance of ethics in guiding management decisions, hunter choices, and the surrounding politics will be presented. We encourage you to reflect on how the use and enjoyment of natural resources has an impact on your communities and how you may get involved and participate in its wonder.

Dipper ... sounds neat, too late for me to attend.

You ever read "For the Health of the Land" by Leopold?

Some of these values are timeless regardless of what peer pressure suggests ...

.

Sounds very informative.............post back on what you think of it.

You can still sign up I just registered. I think all these guys complaining about their DNR should participate.

Thanks for the link dipper. I looked at this last evening, and one can sign up for the course all the way up until the end pretty much. I will be signing up this evening as well, especially since I am one of those guys who "complains" about my DNR. I will look at this as a real learning experience, even though I have read most of Leopold's more popular works back in high school. I'm interested to see how they teach this curriculum compared to the way I was taught it 25+ years ago. It sure doesn't seem like many of the graduates from these fields of study nowadays put much weight in his teachings for some reason. I was just reading a paper last evening put together by 2 young wildlife program grads that basically said Leopold's teachings were highly flawed and no longer held any benefit in today's management. They were probably the types that have some agenda, some pet plant species or endangered lizard that they, themselves must save from utter destruction at the hands of all other outdoor enthusiasts, so d*mn the teachings of the guy who wrote the textbooks on the common sense ways to manage wildlife. Having all those resources and information at your fingertips will be pretty cool. We will see if my opinion of Dr. Timothy Van Deelen changes after the end of this course.

Dipper - Please pass along the highlights if you can. I am looking into signing up as well, but my home connection sucks and I am not sure it would be a good idea to do this at work..... I am very interested in seeing the proverbial "other side of the fence".

I just checked it out j-bird, you are correct, probably not something you want to attempt from work. I think you would be fine from home though, it really is just a few videos, links to reading materials, and some small survey questions each week and forum discussions similar to this. There is a quiz at the end of each week, but it is optional.

I'll do more looking into it - you guys recall what the cost is?

Free! I signed up and did a few small activities between meetings already this morning, but to go any further at work wouldn't be good.

I like FREE!!!!

I'm signed up - I will see how it goes. Thanks for bring this up Dipper!

As phil mentioned, we will have to see just how far left the teachings have become on subjects like this since the days of Teddy R. and Aldo. Everyone from WI should take this course, 3-4 hours a week is all that is really needed, and these "concepts" were "born" and perfected right here in WI.

Not letting me register, maybe I have complained about the dnr too much?? :D

I will have to try later.

I intend on trying to keep an open mind. If anything having an understanding of the thought process of "the other side" is always a good thing.

I would totally agree j-bird, and I will carry that same attitude, it may help all of "us" to better know the thought process of the "other side" when it comes to dealing with future issues.
"To know your enemy, you must become your enemy"...Sun Tzu

Sun Tzu! Is that the guy in the Karate Kid movie? "Wax the car, wax on, wax off!" I thought that guy was Pat something-or-other?!?!?!:D

No, I'm pretty sure if Mr. Miyagi was trying to "crane kick" Sun Tzu, Sun Tzu would have just beheaded him.
