This is Why BOB Seed Companies Get a Bad Rap

Feel sorry for anyone who buys BOB seed products as you are pretty much getting screwed.

Deer Creek seed which I buy some specialty seed from and is a good company, is charging $13.45 for a 5 lbs bag of winter rye. That comes out to $150 per bushel (56 lbs). See below link...
winter rye

I can buy WR at my local feed mill for $13 per bushel. You can buy winter rye from Welters seed for $15/bushel.

Yesh, that would hurt the checkbook putting a 100 plus# down to the Acre.

Sure they have sold a couple bags to someone with deep pockets and lack of knowledge.
For some reason deer hunters love to shell out some doe in their pursuit of venison (bad pun, I know).

I saw their pricing earlier this autumn when I was shopping around for winter rye. I think it is a supply issue and they know they can't really compete with feed mills. It sucks because I actually like a lot of their seed.

Yes, $13.45 for 5 lbs is crazy expensive (by the lb) but at least be fair and mention that deer creek sells 50 lb bags for $16.95.

No clue how much shipping costs are (likely out of Deer Creek's control anyways).

No idea who the 5 lb bags are marketed to/for but it isn't the guy planting acres of food plots. The bulk of that $13.45 is going into the packaging and handling.

Yikes.
And I was unhappy about paying $18/bushel this year!

I only get seed online if they have free shipping otherwise the shipping costs more than the seed which puts it over what I'm willing to pay.

The 5lb bags are prob for people who use it in their gardens. Even the gardeners are getting screwed.

Oh come on! Price to whatever the market will bare! If you have a garden and believe you can improve your soil by planting a cover crop, you'll do it. It's the activity, not the result! What's a few dollars when you've invested a couple hundred (or thousand) in gardening equipment. What's a one oz packet of garden seed cost?
Here ya' go - eBay:
5 lb 15.99
5# 14.25
2# 9.89
1# 17.49
5# 4.95 + 8.40 shipping
12# 25.50
10# 25.00
25 g (grams!) 1000 seeds! (organic) 2.99 + 3.00 shipping
5# Wren's Abruzzi Rye 13.95

Isn't America Great!
The thing is, if that's all you need, you can get it without ever leaving your chair and it comes right to your front door!

I bought two 50 lb bags of WR from the local coop In Athens, Wi in August for $13 and change per bag.

Seed tag on the bag said “Deer Creek Seed”

makes you wonder what they sell it to the co ops for!

I have been using the smart mix calculator at green cover seed. Even with shipping, the price for a highly diverse, custom blend is less than most BOB...

We went by deer creek seed 5 times in one year travelling, stopped 3 times to pick up pre-ordered seed. Very good service with a great variety of seed.

Yes, and then Robbinhood will try to help the poor ... and the lazy ... end of the day the sellers will still rape those who can't help themselves :emoji_wink:

This. Their 50 lb bag is in line with most other places. They make a premium on small amounts of all their seed. I prefer welter in that regard.
I planted the brassica blend from DCS this summer. It grew great although per lb it was pricey. I’d buy it again though.

Then again, the guy who doesn't know any better is happy as hell---until we come along and tell him how bad he got screwed. Ignorance is bliss.

50# from my local seed guy was 20 bucks I wasn't upset about that. But Moffat of it didn't takedue to no rain. However Sat I checked a random spot we TnM some CC and there was a lot of little clovers coming up. No idea why it took and the other didn't

I noticed the same thing last year when I bought it at the local co-op in Chippewa Falls

Jackpine where do you get seed in Chippewa?

I've been going to elk mound seed for the last couple years. As long as you buy the big bags their pricing has been good.

I buy my radish, turnips, and some clover from DC, not because they are cheap, but because they sell it in small bag sizes. I dont need a 20 pound bag, and dont want to store it for a year or 2. I know I could buy 20 pounds for the same price as I pay for 5-10 pounds, but I dont need 20 pounds.

Now winter rye is sold all over around here, there are places that sell it along the road for $2 bushel for $15, or 3 for $20. I ussually put a bushel and a half down in each 3/4 acre plot every fall. Certainly wouldnt pay high dollar for small quantities.

I see this in things like their purple top turnips as well. My local retailer sells a 7 pound jug from Deer Creek at $30 (that's $4.28/lb)....My local seed guy sold me purple top turnip at 2.13 a pound.

I got my winter wheat for $16/bu this year.

I realize it's easy to grab a BOB seed mix at times....and on a small scale it's not that big of a deal. But if you are on a tight budget or planting a decent amount...there is certainly money to be saved. You can also look on the BOB seed bags and see exactly what is inside and reproduce those same mixes if you want or something pretty darn close. Also be aware that in a lot of clover BOB seed half of what you are paying for is seed coating....
