Sugar beets for Fall planting

Has anyone ever planted these in the Fall by themselves and not in a mix? I know they are picky, but was curious to get some feed back. I was thinking about doing an acre.

I didn't have any luck with them. Just didn't germinate. Planted late spring.

In my somewhat limited experience with them, you have to be patient, control weeds (generally requiring 2 sprayings), and pour the N to them.

I don’t use any N at planting but I generally give them 100 actual pounds of N per acre at about 6 weeks post planting.

I have found that they are slow out of the gate on bulb production but once they reach about that softball size they really take off. Guessing it has a lot to do with the roots sprawling out to gather more water and nutrients.

Mark Drury really likes the Biologic (obviously sponsored by them) Winter Bulbs and Sugar Beets blend for a fall planting. I think the seed count for sugar beets is fairly low but I'm not sure what else is in the mix (if anyone knows?). That's the only case of fall planted sugar beets I've heard of..

That's the thing about be sponsored---as soon as they pay you to promote their product you all of a sudden love it no matter what you really think. jmho

Not saying it's a bad product but you can't believe people on the payroll

It is very low in the bag. I have checked it before and laughed , but they have in big letters “ Sugarbeets” on the front of the bag

No doubt. FWIW - Mark strikes me as one of the more genuine TV hunters out there, there is a lot many could learn from him.

I agree 100%. The products do work but can be found for pennies on the dollar somewhere else. I enjoy all the shows they have but do notice they seem to be getting more creative lately. Hell, it happened to James Kroll. MONEY

I plant them right now for fall/winter.
Used to plant a mix but deer here didn’t like the turnips at all and barely touched the radishes.
I’m in a very high ag area and deer don't touch anything until after first good freeze in fall when sugar changes in the beets. Then they eat them up within a couple weeks eating tops and digging bulbs.

I plant them in between corn rows along woods.

How big are these getting typically?

I have planted RR in the late Spring before and the tubers were bigger than softballs. I’m sure with a Fall planting ( not RR) the tubers will be prob be just bigger than golf balls.

The greens a foot tall the bulbs about baseball size. Soil here is loamy clay, if we get a couple rains they start pretty good with just broadcasting seed. In September they really jump on the growth.

If your deer numbers were the same as the properties the big name tv guys manage they would eat any green fall planting to the ground no matter what it is. If you planted sugar beets right now you would be hard pressed to get bulbs baseball sized depending on where you are located but….

And who says they are actually planting the stuff they endorse anyway?

$$$ for promotion removes a lot of their credibility.

For some perhaps, many are more sell outs than others..

After talking about this today I had to go get some pics.

Currently the bulbs are tennis ball sized and they were planted 6 weeks ago. No competition, full sun, and some of the best soil in the universe. The greens do little to no good at all for me. Less than 2% of them will get touched. (Same goes for PTT or any of the forage type of brassica)

I’m not a blind follower of Sturgis but as he says, sugar beets in a mix are a “Buzz Word”

I too have planted sugar beets in spring with no luck. I had no germination for the most part. They definitely seem finicky compared to radishes and turnips! Ive always broadcasted but would love to drill them in next time.

I broadcast mine but do run a drag across them several times. They like to have some soil on top of them.

This has been my experience. My turnips have been more reliable and a pretty solid draw.
