Straw for OM

My dad’s place is about what you describe. It is about 30-40 inches deep of sugar sand. Once you break past the root layer, you can bury a post hole digger with almost no effort every single stroke. It will almost fully bury with just its own weight and gravity.

What I’m having him do is stop all tillage. He kept telling me that that was impossible with him not having a no-till drill.... then I happened to find out the guy that cuts his hay and harvests his pecans has one he will let him use for free.

So, the prescription is legumes drilled in spring for summer food (he is opting for soybeans), then a fall blend of cereal grains, turnip, and radishes in the fall. He is either drilling the fall blend into the soybeans, or throw and mowing them in.

He has been REAL hard headed about the tillage. He has been rotary tilling the plot twice a year since he started plotting. Kills me every time.
