Staring at the weather

ya supposed to start out W for me in the morning then switch to SW and then to S by evening. South wind is terrible for me so I might just sit it out as it's supposed to get into the 70s anyway. Might go do an observation sit on a friends property. He had it timbered pretty heavy this year, so I have no idea what to expect. Lots of oaks top with acorns on them, laying on the ground though. It could be good.
I am going after an old, wide 7 in the AM (but will probably shoot a 1.5 year old doe..), then trying to get my mentored niece a shot at a big old meaty doe out of a blind on our big foodplot in the afternoon...for that venture I am the designated cameraman, as my brother will be the dad/instructor...hoping that NW wind forecast stays true as that is perfect for the blind

Nice! What software did you use?

I use OnX for similar purposes, although most is in my head by now..
Honestly I did this in Google Slides. I took a screen shot of the area that I hunt from Google maps and pasted that into a slide. Then I just dropped text on it showing where to go when the wind is coming from that direction.

Good luck. I have 3 big 8 pts in the area. I only got video of them once but I've heard reports that they're still in the area. I've been getting pics of three big doe together with no fawns. I'll probably shoot one of them if they come around.

you too! we have way too many doe and like to shoot them before the rut heats up so they are on the menu too...lots of strange-racked bucks this year but no true giants yet (we run 18 cams or so, so we would like to think if we had some big fellas around we mighta got a sniff by now)

I rarely see buck in the summer other than a brief pass through. All I've been seeing for the last couple of weeks is a basket 7 pt and a trophy 3 pt. (10 inch spikes with a brow tine). Typically the bigger bucks don't move in until mid September to mid October, once the bachelor groups break up. Usually I'll get one nice buck to stay there, but when the rut kicks in there is usually a parade of bucks because I have so many does around. Really hoping my new food plot is going to seal the deal. It's right off the main bedding area. As long as I can sneak in there without being seen or heard.

10 day in central MN barely dips into the 40s for lows.. crazy. Might get close to maturity on brassicas after all.

Opening day tomorrow, next week's forecast, rain from Sunday til Saturday. Figures

bringing this thread back as I just mowed a plot that I need to spray and then broadcast and cultipack...trying to get clover and brassicas in early..then follow up with oats/WR later..
forecast doesn't really even have enough rain in it to get the former hayfield I mowed to green up enough to spray...mid 80s at a minimum and only an occasional thunderstorm...so much for getting those brassicas in on July 4th haha..almost wishing for some tropical system to hang a left at New Jersey to get us some rain...IMG_6767[1].JPG

I know I planted my brassicas July 2nd because we were supposed to get rain that evening. Here 9 days later and it still hasn't rained. Calling for severe thunderstorms tomorrow night. Hopefully won't rain too hard and wash everything out.

wish you the best on that one...I wanted to have it all mowed/sprayed/seeded by now but that didn't happen and I am only spraying once so I want to make sure there's some growth going on before I do that...dont want to waste either the spraying or the seeds...I know summers are hotter and drier but gotta at least have a 3 day stretch of fronts once in a while right?

Ive planted my plots twice since June 4th and I still have nothing. This has been my worst year in over 20 years... next to last year. Im also hoping to salvage something through my brassica and grain plots but looking at the extended forecast now, its upper 90's and sun for the next 10 days. No rain in sight. Sure takes the fun out of watching things grow. :(

That was what I had last year. This year (2 weeks ago) I planted before 3 potential days of rain, and got about 1/10", but yesterday and today we got a little over an inch, This should get them started for me, lets hope we can keep getting some every week.

It doesn't even feel like hunting season to me when it's so warm. Not sure how you guys down south do it but I guess one gets used to it especially if you grew up there.

Rain missed us again. So much for my early brassica plantings. Hopefully I had enough thatch over top to do something. Looks like thunderstorms possible Sunday/Monday. Fortunately our local farm store sells PTT. I'll grab another small bag of that and try again I guess.

Checked out my mowed field last night...starting to green up a little and we got a 20 minute steady shower yesterday...probably shooting for spraying this weekend then trying to time my planting for just before a couple day stretch of 50% chance of thunderstorms...who knew in addition to being a soil biologist, botanist and farmer one also had to be a meteorologist too...

Finally got a decent rain overnight. What are the chances that the brassica seeds I planted a month and 2 weeks ago germinate? Had a little bit of thatch on them. It was supposed to rain after I planted both times but this is the first good rain we've had in a month and a half at least.

I think our season is a good bit later than yours. Rut In my area was first week of February this past year, which is generally cold for us (probably a nice spring day for y’all!)
