Some folks just don't get it!

You guys know I'm an advocate of prescribed fire as a management tool, but I'm very cautious: http://www.habitat-talk.com/index.php?threads/your-un-controlled-burn-story.11897/#post-219356

A couple weeks ago, we had a real pro come in to lead the burn shown in the link above. He filed a burn plan and got an exception to the pre-4PM burn ban in our area. Conditions were perfect and we still had a minor firebreak jump but had a backup break.

So, today I got to the farm and unlocked the gate. I could hear leaf-blowers and I wasn't sure if they were on our farm or the adjacent property. I headed out to investigate. It wasn't long before I saw smoke. As I got further I could see flames. It was a very windy day with swirling wind. As I got a little further I could hear voices down in the naturally regenerating hardwoods on the adjacent property. It was thick but I was able to see folks. They were in fire-retardant gear. I headed over to investigate.

It was firemen from the local fire department. I had a quick chat and offered to disk up some of our breaks as backup, but they said they had it under control. The were making make-shift breaks with the blowers. It turns out that some idiot ignored the open fire ban and was burning leaves in a nearby development and it got out of control. I asked about the burn ban, and the firefighter said "Some folks just don't get it!....They will pay..." It wasn't long until the blowers stopped and they just waited with sprayers for it to go out.

By the way, they have stopped granting burn exceptions temporarily in our area to prescribed burners. This is part of the COVID-19 response, not permanent as far as I know.

Enough rant...

Thanks,

Jack

The other day wind was gusting to 30 and they had over 300 prescribed fires called in. Its been so wet ranchers are trying to get the pasture burned as cattle go on in 2 weeks.

Wow!

Only 1 escaped. Got 30 acres that will burn this week anyway
