Sea Berry or Sea Buckthorn

cavey

5 year old buck +
Anyone have any experience with this type of plant... from what I have read it is not the buckthorn we have grown to hate. I ordered some to try in my orchard. Its is intolerant of any type of shade and seems to be non invasive but I do not know a lot about it. The hybrids have less thorns.

I bought a couple 4 or 5 years ago. Planted in the yard and full sun except for weeds right against them. One died and the other is still about 12" tall. I decided I didn't really want thorny bushes so there so they've gotten no care other than not being mowed off. From what I read, you even need to prune out older branches to keep them from shading the younger ones to keep them fruiting. Did you order a male plant for pollination?

Yes I did get a male in the mix for pollination I made sure of that, their going to my home orchard, I have a fairly large area I m planting out into fruit trees of various types, I even put in a small multi variety vineyard, plus an area for berries so i think they will be fine there in the mix... they are going to be coming in potted 1 gal containers. These are supposed to have less thorns - we will see. Im not sure / curious about if they have any wildlife value.
