S.T.Fanatic's Land Tour

I bet if you look close you will find a hole from a small caliber or even an arrow.

I looked it over fairly thoroughly and didn’t find any evidence of that. With their winter coats I could have missed it but…

My youngest shot his first deer with a .243 with 85 grain ballistic tips. If he didn't drop it where it stood we would have never found it. No blood, no hair, no exit wound. Never found the holes until we skinned it.

Shotguns, muzzleloaders, and broad heads leave a good size entry hole if not a sizable exit hole with busted legs/shoulders and the like. No bordering state land and nobody squirrel hunts private anymore because of the area producing trophy whitetails. (Not mule deer like the picture in the wolf video )

What seems off to me is the ground around him. It’s like he was trying to make a “snow angel”. Dirt tore up pretty good about 1 1/2 the size of the deer.

My son's buck this fall was shot with a 350 Leg several inches too high. Deer dropped in its tracks and never got up. It made a "snow angel" in the field in just a few short moments. When we inspected the deer it took us quite a while to find the tiny entry hole. It was totally hidden by its coat and there wasn't a drop of blood. Not saying you missed it after a good inspection, only saying we slug gun hunters were surprised at the minuscule hole of the new rifle. In any event, sad loss of a nice buck. Hopefully a better one fills his void.

Did you flip him over? That is a bummer for sure. It does hold promise for the possibilities moving forward if you are producing 3 year olds like that. The snow angel effect is probably a death kick or something of that nature which would lead me to believe is is some sort of physical injury and not disease related IMO.

I used a .243 for 26 years. 100 gr bullets. Hardly ever had an exit hole. .243 tends to just fragment inside, especially if you aim for the shoulder. If I aimed back a little for double lung, I'd get an exit hole and decent blood trail. Most never got out of sight though. Dropped right there or went 20 yards. Never lost one w/ that gun. For years I used Remington corlokt. Much prefer Hornady these days.

I would agree with every bit of that. We upgraded to 100 grain last year. He shot two deer. Since then he has yet to have one go more than 20 ft. Maybe. For a very small caliber, it is very very effective at killing deer quickly

I switched to a 6.5 creedmoor couple years ago. Have shot two with it so far. Neither one went a foot. Hoping my nephew will use the .243 in a couple years (7 now). I've got several different bullets for the 6.5 but have been using the 129 gr Hornady American whitetail rounds. I like those in the .243 as well (100 gr).

I did flip him over and also did not notice anything. There was a few spots on the deer absent of hair that I thought was strange.

I just can't get over how fresh it looks like it had just dropped a minute before you took the picture. No degradation, no bloating, no nothing. I know it's cold but think you'd see a little something at least. I would be willing to bet if you skin that thing you would find a wound there somewhere. I mean he looks healthy other than being dead lol. Thank you. If it was disease of some sort you would be skinny and nothing but skin and bones.

I never thought to skin it. I may have to do that.

Any roads nearby? Could explain the hair loss and maybe some internal blunt force trauma

I wouldn’t have considered that in the past. Just a couple gravel township roads. However, this fall there was a dead die lying right next to one of those roads. Usually one is not traveling all that fast on a crushed road that you would kill a deer by hitting it. Usually you could slow down enough to miss it entirely. Maybe a truck hit her square in the head?

This was brought up earlier. Tonight I was at my sons basketball game and sat next to the owners of one of the neighboring land owners. The other night the heard a couple of gunshots. They went out the driveway and there was a truck turning around and driving off. After hearing that it has me questioning the possibility that someone had previously shot it with a small caliber rifle. I still lean towards doubting it but…

If I was Colombo,at this point I'd be turning around saying "just one more thing"
I'd be surprised if you don't find a very small entrance with no exit hole

Forgot about this until I stumbled across it today.

Is it jacketed?

I don't recall if I kept the bullet or not. I'm guessing it's laying around somewhere. Thinking it was lead core with copper jacket but could be wrong.

For as crappy of a deer season it has been (daylight deer movement wise) There has been a lot of buck movement (with does and fawns) around scrapes lately.
