RWW Upland Blend

You don't hear much about this product. Seems their soybeans, MG, deadly dozen etc. get a lot more press.

I just bought a 1 acre bag of RWW Upland Blend I intend to both attract gamebirds as well as help have a taller section to block a near(ish) gravel road. There is a decent amount of red milo/sorghum in the mix - going to be fun to see what all uses it this fall.

Curious if anyone has tried this and what their impressions were?

Got it in yesterday! 1 Acre strip along the full length of a 4 acre field, all lightly disced in.
- 300# 13-13-13
- 100# Urea (46-0-0)
- 80# Calcium Sulfate (Per Soil Test)

Now we just need rain ASAP so the seed will take off before the turkeys find all of it :emoji_nerd:

Right side is just Fescue (Eww) and Med Red Clover that I will be converting this summer for a fall plot.

I have not use that specific mix. I'm planting larger acreage where mixing my own is more efficient than on tiny plots. It is a good overall mix of plants but the bean component would not work well for me. You really want a legume in the mix to balance out the N-seekers, but deer would nip off soybeans in the mix before they could establish. This leaves the mix with no legume. I would use an annual clover, sunn hemp, or some other legume either instead of, or in addition to, the soybeans. That would provide a better balance over the life of the plant.

Thanks,

Jack

Yes, definitely area and situation dependent. There are certainly places with low deer densities or greater amounts of quality food where deer won't bother beans.

Looks like an awesome strip to bird hunt! Im sure it'll make a great plot full of cover and feed... with or without the beans.

Ive been throwing together a few mixes like that around my place just in little micro plots. The Millet especially grows so easily from my experience.

Also in my land tour thread, thought I would update here as well..

Milo really starting to get going in the upland blend. A stray sunflower and soybean here and there, for the most part I believe the turkeys got to them when the forecasted rains went around us.

Disking in was not ideal compared to a packer, but did a "decent" job in some areas, irregular in others.. :emoji_rolling_eyes:

Milo finally starting to get some good growth, this past week of 90 degree temperatures and heat really helped! A few grasses here and there, but nothing too bad yet.

What a difference a couple weeks makes, super sunny and hot temperatures in the 90s and I hardly recognize the place!

The Japanese Millet has nearly overtaken the milo now. I'm a tad worried about sunlight but it still looks very green despite the Millet "competition".

They say Japanese Millet gets 2-4 ft tall but some sections are clearly headed out over 6', no doubt due to the added N :emoji_nerd:

The 1 acre "strip" frames the field interior quite nicely now. Looking forward to starting my fall plots soon down the (mowed) 1.5 acre center section.

I believe I lost about 99% of the sunflowers in the blend and many of the soybeans. Although there are quite a few still in some areas, coexisting nicely in the shade, grasses.. :emoji_grinning: ..and ragweed :emoji_rolling_eyes:

When did you plant this?

I planted a game bird mix from Deer Creek Seed end of May. It had sunflowers, soybeans, sorghum, and 3 kinds of millet. Any broadleafs that I saw early disappeared. I'm guessing the deer demolished them. I think what I have left is millet and maybe sogrhum. I've never planted any of these so I'm bad at identifying them but I don't have much for seed heads yet.

When did you plant this?

Planted on June 4th. Pictures above are approximately 50 days of growth on July 25th.

Millet is a shorter season crop, you should have heads by now as you planted ahead of me. Milo is a 90 day crop, mine is in the boot stage right now, I should see heads in another couple weeks..

We only got like 0.1" of rain for two weeks after I planted so it didn't exactly jump out of the gate. It was really slow in the beginning. Now everything is 3-4' tall. Or maybe I've just got massive weeds growing.

Here’s a pic from Saturday. On the left in 1st pic. There is no doubt some weeds in there but I’m hoping some of what I’m seeing is millet or sorghum.

This is exactly what happened to me as well, I think most of the sunflowers and some of the soybeans sprouted due to the moisture and then died out in the following 2 weeks. The smaller seeds seem to survive much better or they didn't germinate.

Agree, looks to be predominantly sorghum and / or from these photos. Maybe Pearl Millet.. It has a maturity time more in line with WGF milo.

Also, did you fertilize when you planted? Most sorghums benefit from about 100# of N. Corn being the exception that needs quite a bit more..

Yes triple 17 and urea.

As long as it’s something I planted I’m good with it!

Here is a seed head from last weekend. Not sure if it’s a weed or millet.

Yep, millet. Looks like Proso Millet.
ok thanks! That was definitely in the mix. It said the mix should produce from 60-100 days. I think it had proso, pearl, and japanese millet.

You should have heads on the Jap Millet by now, so you may not have much if it in the mix. Pearl Millet is the tallest of the group, and the most late to mature.

I ran up to plant some brassica plots after work since it showed a chance of rain tonight, that looks like it won’t materialize. Another chance tomorrow night at least.

Anyways I noticed more seed heads formed just since the weekend.

This looks like Japanese millet maybe?
