Is anyone growing it?

How hardy is it?

Susceptible to cedar apple rust?

Just reading up on them they sound like a early bearing tree - sweet which I think is a key thing for deer.... I did read this though -

"One important note of interest; they are known for bursting their skin when they become over-ripe so pick when ripe." - "Highly perishable"

zone 4 considered hardy and Russian - must be a tough one.

And some recommended picking just a bit early, like Norland.

I have two. No apples yet. It's a relatively early apple, which is what I want for the spots I planted them. Trees growing great so far, but a deer attacked them.

I had one in my suburban St. Louis MO yard 20 years ago. Apples ripened around the first of August. Pick them early or they will split wide open. Texture was softer than I like but he tart flavor should have made a good pie. We all got a good laugh when the first apple pie slice was pulled from the pan. All the filling had cooked to apple sauce. They did make a good sauce and we used them that way for a couple of years. The tree didn't like the heat much and it died from fire blight after 3 or 4 crops. I don't remember rust being a problem. They might do better further north.
