Received first tree order with great disappointment

WTNUT

5 year old buck +
Opened my first box of trees for the year. They were packed well with shredded newspaper and plenty of moisture. There were some unique varieties - sort of. The price was about $30 per tree give or take. However, they are the smallest bare root trees I have ever seen! I would say on average they are 28 inches above the graft (they had not been trimmed to get in a box) and maybe maybe the size of a number 2 pencil.

I guess what is expected really, ya know what i mean. I have 40+ varieties in my nursery that were all grafted spring of ‘16. Some are an inch thick some are a 1/4ish based on their vigor. Some are near feet, some are 2-3 feet tall.

Im just happy all are healthy and ready to be transplanted in 2-3 weeks. When buying a fruit tree what is rightfully expected?

Well I always say I have a 100 trees, but probably have 200. I have been ordering them for a lot of years. I have ordered from Adams County Nursery and they have always been topped before shipped, well feathered and usually about 5/8 in diameter and sometimes larger. I order mostly from Grandpa’s Orchard most often and their trees are huge, feathered and the largest roots. Most of the time they are second year trees and are cheaper than my recent purchase. Plus I have had greatest survival rates and best growth out of their trees. Again, always at least 5/8 diameter and often 7/8. I was not expecting a short 1/4 inch whip that is 24-28 inches tall. When I saw the box on the porch I knew I was in trouble. Others ship in a box that is about 10 - 12 inches square. This box was 6 inches square maybe.

The ones you just got them were from which nursery?

They were from Fedco Trees. To show I am not exaggerating there is a tree in this pic :) Look closely this was NOT the smallest by far. IMG_6891.JPG

I think the root stocks I received from the same nursery were about that size.

Yikes, honestly struggled to see it, had to look close.
Not good when it took the lime green tag to give it away.

If it didn’t have the lime green tag you could not see it, and again that one is not the smallest just a middle of the “roader”. Oh well, maybe they will grow fine, but I will not be ordering from them again unless they have some tree I can’t find any other place. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice ........ you know how that ends.

Thanks for the heads up to not order from there

Oh wow. Yep, I’d be a tad disappointed as well. Hope they take off for you.

That's very disappointing. I know we all put a lot of thought into the trees we order. So, to start with less than ideal trees is really a kick in the ass. It's not like they were priced cheaper because they were smaller. My hope is that these trees will make up for lost time under your good care. Appreciate the heads-up WTNUT.

What did you you order?

Reputable nurseries & companies classify their stock .... 1-3 year old seedlings vs transplants. Seedlings are the youngest AND The transplants have a 2, 3 year classification. True 2-0 to 3-0 old transplants ... Have very well developed root balls and are 2-4' high with developed branching.

You probably got what you ordered ... something from a BOB companies that over fertilized a young seedling.

Was it Morse Nurseries?

No, they were simply listed as 3-6 foot bare root trees. I would never order from Morse. Read above as to who they came from.
