Rambling Plots

Just few pics of throw and mow into WW /clover plot done late July. 19-19-19 added but no Urea which is what can really make brassica pop. I’ve done mono culture brassica before with great results. But no more. This less time and money consuming. The WW reseeds itself yearly as do the clovers. I don’t add either of those. Plenty of weeds and grasses which give me no concern. Same mix for last 6 years of overseeded PTT , Daikon radish, DER. Same ole mix, same ole results.
Broadcast seed and fert. Mow. Go play golf. Not complicated. Same w my 8 yo clover/ chicory plot and my 7 yo alfalfa/clover/ chicory plot. Deer do just fine.

Nice! Very much how I do things also. It's a big giant easy button.

I tried the same thing this year and it failed. You must've added the secret ingredient that I could not in months of July & Aug ... rain! :emoji_wink:

Nice plots. Yes rain fixes a lot of problems!

Last year had 6 mo extreme drought according to NWS. Results were similar w the exception deer destroyed them quickly as browse was poor due to said drought.
I have typical poor mountain soils but ph is kept 6+ and soil tests are VH in each category. Much of that I attribute to past grazing of cattle and their inputs when done properly.
I have worked on crop rotation now for 10 years building thatch and OM which allows better success w t/m. If it can be done on my hillside plots then most anywhere it will succeed except perhaps sandy soils.

It'll work on sandy soil as well.....It doesnt get much sandier than what I have unless you're sitting in a lounge chair staring at the ocean....

Timely rain is the key to success in my sandy soils.....

all my plots turn picturesque........... in April........

Lots of OM helps sandy soils...

What is your PTT, Radish & DER seed rate for overseeding into your WW & Clover ?

I’m out of town so don’t have my records book but 1-2 # for turnip and rape and 3 for radish I think. T/M needs upped rate but little is better than more for tubor size.

I can plant monoculture in the old days. In those days I overseeded w clover and rye late Oct.
Funny I’m near Raleigh at moment and driving not far from here nearly wrecked the car seeing a 10 ac field of brassica.
Go figure , they were advertising for these libtards to come pick fresh greens!! I’m going home and opening a new business. Here’s pic from my old plot efforts...

Are you seeding directly into live plants or are you suppressing it first with gly or something else?

I’ve done it all. The above pic was w tillage and lots of urea.
I’ve sprayed seeded then mowed. I’ve sprayed mowed then seeded.
Now I don’t spray , just spread seed and fert, mow already dead WW and walk away. Certainly I try to time w a good rain but our weather these days that’s difficult. Mid July to first of Aug planting.
Thatch needs to be adequate but not heavy. Smothering is a problem.
