Rabbit fencing and mid west snow.....

cavey

5 year old buck +
My rabbit fencing is not doing much with this snow..... The temporary fencing for my nursery is a bit at risk, and the skid steer was getting stuck on the bottom side so I went with the snow blower to at least drop the grade back to ground level. I should have bought taller rabbit wire fencing. We'are just lucky most of the drifts are not out by the garden. But tonight we are getting dumped on again.

Only about 4 inches above snow on my rabbit fence, but not seeing any tracks. Might get freezing rain tonight, which would put a hard crust on top and really make it easy for them.

That’s an ingenious solution cavey. I’m thinking my rabbit and rodent fencing is not nearly tall enough now. We don’t have the snow pack that you guys have now, but we certainly have at times in recent years. I'm going to burn this image of your fence in my mind, so the next time I think “this is high enough”, I double it!

There has not been any bunnies around till about a month ago, One found the concrete pile I have just beyond the fenced area... it has a run going to the south and I need to drop a live trap beside the pile on the hippity hop trail ... Its been a while since I ate rabbit.

I will never buy the shorter rabbit (chicken wire) fencing again. The rabbit fencing (its less than 2' because its buried) was more of a summer thing - I never see tracks out there in the winter - till this year. This was all a temporary fence combo thing that has lasted a few years longer than intended. Its not a tall fence either (stuck lath in as post extensions and ran sting around with ribbon tied on just to make it look taller. The deer will challenge it in the deeper snow too - they were nosing up to it and checking the openings/gates... I need to bomb some mouse poison into the enclosure as well... snow is up over many of my newly grafted trees and I'm worried about what I cant see. Everything is window screen protected but those are 18" cut screens and are 6" to a 12" + below the snow.

Goal will be something more like 36" of bunny wire with the 5' concrete wire on top; 8' will work for me... I have an idea how I want to do it, not sure I will use the chicken wire - that works well till I hit it with the weed whip or mower. Its just not strong enough.
