Quick Clover!

Hello everyone,
Just wanted to show you an update from this week's activities...my neighbor wanted me to put some clover in for him...so this week we pulled the trigger on about a quarter acre. Sprayed it with gly and seeded some gallant red, mammoth red and alsike clover on Tuesday afternoon/evening.
Last night I stopped by to check on it...and there was germination already (ok they are the small 2-leafed sprouts, but they are there)! We probably had the best weather in the world for frost seeding (Steady rain Tuesday night, with light snow Wednesday night and freezing temps Wednesday and Thursday night). Still couldn't believe it germinated in 2 days! Good work Merit Seed!IMG_3880[1].JPG

Put some down yesterday, 3 different locations. They were calling for rain Wed but looks like they took it out of the forecast. So here's to hoping that weather man is wrong

What are your soil temps right now in PA? Isn’t it too cool for gly this early? Asking because I am in Wis. and our soil temps are pretty cool yet.
thanks,
Chris

Our soil temps are in the mid 50s...I definitely sprayed the gly too early, but then the temps shot up and the grass/weeds browned up nicely. I think it just took a little while longer than normal.

Thanks for the reply Derek. It’s fun to see the guys/gals on the east coast start their projects and it usually Seems to be a few weeks before us. We planted some Whitetail Crabapple trees a couple days ago and were able to till up a few plots on our lighter ground but we have had on/off showers for the past 4 days now so things need to dry out and warm up.
Good luck with the new seeding!
Chris

Good luck to you as well....I'm just trying to get the trees in before they leaf out! I am planting basically in my front yard but still gotta find time to do it all.

Here's an update: this plot looks awesome! My neighbor says there are deer in it every morning and night, even though we have alfalfa, soybeans and corn growing all around. There are some weeds but I really think the clover is dominating most of them...one of my most successful frost (kinda) seeded plots to date...

so I tried a similar mix to the one above on a half acre section of a 3 acre hayfield above my house (I recently put a stand up to watch the one end of it as well..)
I mowed it, then hit it with gly a few days later and added ALOT of 3 kinds of clover...mammoth, MRC, alsike and aberlasting plus a bag of ultra max brassica blend from Merit....
I had germination in less than 48 hours and this is what it looks like 8 days after planting....if I had questions on whether the spring planting was a fluke or not those have been answered...
I am surrounded by ag (corn, soybeans, hay, some alfalfa) so I decided not to compete, but to have a green field available when all the crops are dead or harvested.
This was also the first time I planted into dead weeds/hay and I must say the number of seedlings I am finding coming right up through the dead weeds is very high.
Thank goodness for the small clover seed size. I plan to add 1 bag rye and 1 bag winter wheat to this mix sometime in the next week or so and then add 4-12-12 fertilizer in about 2 weeks.

It all looks like brassica to me but pictures can be deceiving.

the smaller, smooth looking 2-leafed sprouts are the clover, but they are harder to see...the whole field has a green hue that I think is due mostly to the clover...I only put 4 pounds of brassica on the whole half acre

Nice socks....and the plot looks great!

those are sneaking into the plot socks....disperses the scent better so the deer that inhabit that area get used to it....
