Predator guard for 4x4

wango tango

5 year old buck +
I am installing wood duck boxes in my ponds on 4 x 4 ‘s. All of the predator guards I’ve seen seem pretty expensive for what they are. Anyone know of any affordable options or do it yourself ideas?

I was just walking on some Mass. Wildlife Recreation land and they used about a 2' length of some kind of thin sheet metal or coil stock wrapped around the posts just below the box. Seemed like a pretty good idea.

You can buy coil metal which is what they use to cover facias,You can cut as hole in 5 gal bucket.I used galvinized pipe on mine last year.I don't think coons could climb them but don't know about snakes

You can use two strips of galvanized steel or aluminum roll flashing on 4x4s. Nail the first strip down tight around the post and then do another strip above it with a little bit of overlap on the lower strip. Pull it tight and it will keep snakes out also. A 14-inch by 10-foot piece will run about $10.

Since we are talking ducks, has anyone in the midwest had luck with wood duck boxes or mallard tubes?I put both out last year but really didn't start looking at it until later in spring so this year they will be ready earlier.I bought the kits from Greggs wood duck boxes and they were cheaper than I could buy the wood

I have 5 out in se wi. I have had 100 percent nesting the last 4 years. Almost all were woodsy but did have mergansers twice. Sometimes I don't think they are using them, but late winter when I clean them I find all the egg shells.

I just buy cheap metal sheeting at Menards in the heating/cooling section for mine and wrap it around post like a cone bolt it on, just get it a little longer or rivit two togethet for a 4X4. I have no trouble with coons or snakes with it on.

I also purchased the box kits from Gregg’s, mounted them on 4x4’s, and then bought the pre-made sheet metal guards from Phoenix Metals. Am sure there are cheaper alternatives, but they work great. I painted mine olive green, as you can see here. I’ve got 8 up as of last spring and have had some success on them already. Hope this helps.

I made a guard from plans I found on the internet. Was quite of bit a work - probably just buy the next one.
