Poplar Regen

I usually collect mine in spring before They bud out. Don't wait till they bud out. I have stored the fridge for a few weeks with a damp paper towel. Not sure how long they store like this, but pretty sure you don't want them popping out roots. Are you sure you want to start them in your basement instead of just collecting the cuttings and sticking them in the ground? That is a lot more work. If you get them going and they have roots, you will have to be careful not to damage the young roots. I would think you would have to dig holes and carefully plant each one.if you just stick them in you will damage the roots.

Thanks for the info, I might just do it that way then. Do you put a few stick together in a small group when you stick them in the ground or just stick them in all over? I saw a you tube where the guy was just sticking them all over. I want to cage a much as I can. I have seen some on the side of the road on HWY 8 heading to Ladysmith.

Haha I think I know exactly where you seen those. I spotted them in the right away on 8 whenever I go to ladysmith. My land is 13 miles from there. I stick them all over. It won't hurt to stick a few in one spot. The best tip I can suggest is to only have 2-3 inches out of the ground with a bud on top sticking out. Weed control helps first year too if possible.

So I was able to get out last weekend and I got started on one of the areas I want to "enhance" the bedding. Lots of smaller poplar but also a lot of maple growing from the old stumps. So with these "coppiced" maples where all the buds are now way above the deer's heads, do you hinge cut those or are you better off cutting them right off like poplar?

Maybe i'm being simple about it but wouldn't it make sense to manipulate them however makes most sense for what you want the cover to look like? I.E. if you want overhead or side cover from them, hinging might make sense.

I agree but I know what will happen with the poplar, new shoots will come from the roots if it s cut flush. which is what I want. My question on the coppice maple is which way do I go so I don't kill it? In my experience smaller hinged maple usually dies within 2 to 3 years. If hinging won't kill it I would prefer to do that for more side cover.

Thanks
