Poplar cuttings that sucker?

Any of the poplar cuttings sucker or send out runners like some of the wild ones I have seen? What the most invasive poplar? I ask because they hammer them on my farm and the toughest one would be one to try I think.

I've planted quite a few of the different varieties that Big Rock carries. The only suckering I've seen are on a few planted on a hillside where the root system grew out of the ground on the slope. As the roots become exposed they will sucker.

I don't think John carries them and I don't know that I would advise planting them but silver (or some times called white) poplar is more invasive than autumn olive. At least the patches I've seen are.

We have some natural ones growing that sucker, but they get hammered by the deer, so I'm not too worried about them getting outta control. I tried cutting last from the wild ones but didn't have much luck.

When did you take the cuttings? Were they silver or some other type?
I would think most poplars would grow from cuttings. Not sure tulip poplar would but I've been meaning to look it up or try.

Nevermind just looked it up. Even tulip poplar will grow from a cutting.

They were spring time cuttings, my dad actually did them not me. He did some smaller ones just stuck in the ground that didn't take. He did big ones as well, basically like planting a rub tree. Only those with a little root on the base took for the "wild" poplar, I am not sure what kind they are but will look into it. I'm sure they could be rooted under better conditions.

Tell him it's best to use last years growth. Maybe some rooting hormone and it's important to get them before the buds starts to swell. If it has bud broke survival goes way down. Also planting direction is important. Plant what was the bottom down.

You might already know all that. Just in case.

Still would need to get the suckering poplar established, so maybe need to cage the momma, and let it sucker outside the cage. White poplar and its cultivars and hybrids are the main thing for stem cuttings that can sucker. Aspen sucker a lot, but propagated via root cuttings.

Definitely gonna need to fence, I may just do high density hybrid poplar cuttings and see how that goes
