do they grow good in damp areas? Like on a transition line from woods to swamp?
They prefer moist (but not flooded) soils. That area should work well for you.

A good 3 year old buck
I planted American plum in zone 3 sandy soils and the only ones that have grown are the ones that are protected with fence. They grow pretty slowly for me, but they are forming thickets.

The fruit on mine is gone months before deer hunting, but I believe that it provides cover & summer food for small game.

I prefer crabapples, better for deer hunting, and some crabs provide wildlife food in winter, when it is really needed.

i just ordered 25 plum seedling from the county, $33 seems like a fair price for a habitat experiment.
I also order 25 white pine and 25 white cedar. Gonna be busy !!!
