Our pond build

The kids wanted somwthing different to catch hence the channel cat. Ive got about a month to fatten them up before winter.

We love catching the hybrid bluegill! They fight hard and bite readily. Channel cats are fun too, those are the only two fish my dad stocks in his pond and the kids always have a blast there. Good job on the pond build, it looks great.

We had a bunch of rain and the ground is still soggy but I got it mowed in preparation for waterfowl season. That north bank is begging for some sleeper shells with a few floaters in the pond.20181018_140221.jpg20181018_140327.jpg

We are getting a few ducks starting to show up on our ponds this fall too, mostly mallards so far. It's fun to see them using the place but pretty neat every now and then to get a good shoot on our own farm. I try and keep it to just a couple shoots because I like seeing the birds using them and I don't want to bother the deer...but my boys get pretty antsy when they start building up.
I am looking forward to seeing you post up a pic of a waterfowl hunt on your pond, it will ad a whole new dimension to the place for you. Have you been getting much bird traffic in/around/over your pond yet?

Not many birds here yet. Some wood ducks and local canadas fly low right over it.

Had an 8 pack of canadas go over the pond tree top tall, then 400 specks followed. Season opens next weekend.

Throw a few decoys in there.

I plan on it. Ive got 8 bigfoot goose floaters, a doz rester sleeper fullbody ducks, and up to 5 doz ducks. Brother is going to leave some sleeper shells out here. Also if a migration day he has 2.5 doz canada floaters, 10 doz canada fullbodies, 10 doz duck decoys, 10 doz snow goose fullbodies, and 5 doz duck fullbodies. We could completely cover that pond. I am the quality trumps numbers guy and he is the quality and quantity guy. He has a decoy problem.

Wave after wave of low flying geese went over the pond as I sat in the tree stand. Also has some mallards on it. Duck season opens saturday. Goose season opened yesterday. Ive been working the young dog down there.

Pond I wanted to hunt was frozen. Mine was wide open but didnt figure that out till 800. I was hunting by 0830 and drew first blood on the pond 5 min after sitting down.

I hope you have a good hunt. I was going to go duck hunting this morning but had work to do. Plus I've seen very few ducks around lately. Maybe tomorrow.

Nice looking spread!

Its frozen now, but the day before the freeze it had mallards and gwt on it.

Great post! I enjoyed reading it as we are getting ready to embark on a pond project ourselves. We are waiting on the NRCS pond drawing for cost share next week to get an idea of when we will start. They’ve mapped out the first drawing and looks like it’ll be about 2 acres in size. I we can adjust the damn a lot bit I think we might be able to go a little bigger but we will see. I’m going we are lucky and get some geese using it too. We aren’t really in a duck flyway so outside nesting woodies I don’t think we will get many ducks. Great pictures of all your structure. I have a whole bunch of cedars in my CRP that need cleaned up and I think that’s the perfect use for them

Fwiw the NRCS cost share was going to cost us more out of pocket than just having a pond builder do it.

Good to know. My initial estimate is not cheap...but there’s a lot to do. They pay 75% of cost up to the first 20k and I can use anyone I want out if about 30-40 approved folks. Was that the same program you all had?

I divulged from NRCS early. They wanted to put the pond in a low spot and said it would fill slow. I said why not go 100 yds south where a drainage exists. That was like a revalation. The pipe they spec'd was not nearly large enough for projected inflow. They said 6". Pond builder looked where it went under the road and said the county thinks you need a bigger pipe. We ended up with 8 or 10" and Ive still had water almost go around the ends of the dam in the only 2 large events we have had. The NRCS was a total trainwreck.

Makes sense. Fortunately I’ve had s better experience so far. The fact that I have a a good degree of choice in the contractor and decision making process helps. I got to choose my location as well (obviously it had to meet criteria). Hopefully my experience with them continues to go pretty smoothly...if not I’ll go at it alone as well. I assume it’s like any other agency you deal with; sometimes you get a very positive experience, other tones you’re left pulling your hair out and frustrated.

Planting some switchgrass plugs on the west end to hopefully hide a blind. Thinking about having the field on the north side of the pond hayed to make it more inviting to passing birds.
