Anyone have experience with ALPHA NURSERIES in Holland Michigan?? My regular nursery owner in Pa. retired and closed up - but he recommended ALPHA NURSERIES to supply his customer base.

^^^^ I second Blue Hill, Ryan is outstanding with customer service and the trees are much larger than I see anywhere else. BH is a wildlife food source type nursery so disease resistance, volume of fruit and drop times are focused on. I really can't say enough good about BH, I tried twice to get an order in and when I went to check out things were missing from my cart. I emailed Ryan and he set me up for my order the next go round without trying to beat the online rush before everything sells out. He sent me an email with the invoice attached and I paid it without even going to his website to order. Top notch!!

Chief river is also a good one. They are in Wisconsin.

I have bought from Alpha of MI., they have a ton of stuff... I would say they are better than average. I will be buying from them again...

ps.... your regular nursery likely bought from them.

I should have been clearer - the nursery I was buying from was for evergreens, Norway & white spruce in particular. Blue Hill doesn't have evergreens - I've been to their place. Maybe they will in the future?? I've also dealt with Cold Stream - good stock there - no complaints from me!!

I asked about Alpha Nurseries based on my former nursery's recommendation ( Flickinger Nursery of Clearfield, Pa. )

Does Alpha have plugs or are they bare root only - if anyone knows??

Nope. Not sure what you are looking for, but have had good success with Cold Steam Nursury in MI.

I continually hear good things about this company.

I've gotten several varieties from Cold Stream - American high bush cranberry, witch hazel, ROD - and all were nice stock. I'll order from Cold Stream again.

Same here. Hazelnut, Chinese Chestnut, Amer. Plum, Buttonbush, Elderberry, and Ninebark. All in good shape and growing well! Definitely will continue to use them.

They have great conifer stock. Have been buying from them for over 15 years, never an issue.

Why would a nursery close and not sell the business to another person -or-company? Demand should be there? No takers?

Might have been land they wanted to keep in the family?

No idea. One would think that a buyer would jump on an established nursery. Might be like H20 said above - keep the land in the family? They had great stock too :emoji_disappointed: Bought lots of evergreens from them.

Maybe I missed what you're looking for, but Musser Forest in Indiana PA should have evergreens. I bought from them many years ago. Nothing recently.

Musser was always higher-priced than Flickinger's Nursery (the nursery I used for years for evergreens). I've used Pine Grove Nursery in Clearfield too. They have good stock, so I guess I'll shift to them. Thanks for the Musser thought though!!

Does anyone know if Alpha sells evergreen plugs - or just bare root ??

thanks for the heads up on Cold Stream...just checked them out and might look into them for my hybrid poplar and evergreen screening needs.....

Don't forget the various state nursuries for spring bareroot trees. Some such as Iowa and Missouri will ship out of state. Ordering usually starts September 1st.

Just barefoot. I've used them several times and they have been excellent in both quality and service everytime.

I've used Coldstream out of Michigan once and was not at all impressed.

Order early, I tried putting a 3000 tree order together in January this year for a CRP project and found everyone was sold out already of what I wanted (including Alpha). Had to buy from a local conservation district, which ended up fine, just less options and slightly higher pricing than a wholesale nursery.

Our Pa. State Nursery at Howard has gone through some tough times the last few years. They don't have near the stock variety they used to have, and even before Covid-19, they were short-staffed. Budget cuts, pay not very good, etc. I used to order from them for a number of years, but they went off the track ........... sadly.
