Not a sunflower (?)

Slatterday

Yearling... With promise
Can anyone identify these? Is there any benefit to wildlife or soil? It seems to be all over Iowa, presumably just reseeding itself and literally can grow in gravel. I was thinking it might be good in a mix for building up what is now poor rocky soil.

Looks like common sunflower to me. It’s all over MO also. I believe it’s native.

We've got them all over in my country. We call it wild sunflower. Instead of thistles, we get these popping up on disturbed soil.

It may not be a traditional sunflower as most picture in their mind....but is does look to be a native (hopefully) sunflower of some kind. Not all sunflowers are the ones that grow to 8+ feet tall and produce a flower the size of a dinner plate.

Those are perennial sunflowers. Easy way to tell is the multiple flowers on the same plant. They are in the aster family, they are native..
