Northern Whitetail Crabs Rootstock

White Oak

5 year old buck +
I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet. NWC's new website now states "Cold Hardy Bud 118 Rootstock" . Since I been on this site there has been speculation , and people mad or put off that NWC wouldn't tell them the rootstock. Hopefully this info helps.

I am a neophyte in this area. Can you explain the pros & cons of this root stock?

Someone on here post this link awhile ago and I kept it.

I know nothing about it either....just that people wanted to know what it was and NWC wouldn't tell prior to putting on their website.

Everything is relative to where you plan on sticking the thing in the ground and general location.

Have found
M111, P18, Dolgo are my top performers so far. With no one being better than the last. Minus m111 tendency to root sucker which is kind of annoying.

B118 looks ok, some have died.

ANT is yet to be determined, growing good, but slow. If they become monsters one day but just take forever, thats ok, what I'm shooting for.

Will say, dont think the NWC I've planted 2 years ago were on b118, more like m111 due to all the bur knots, although they could have switched in the meantime.

Edit: should add my experience is restricted to my northern area, around 90 trees, and only have been in the ground from 1-11 years, so short on long term data.

No experience with any dwarfing stock outside of m7 which grows fine but has a tendency to grow at a weird slant due to the high winds we experience.

I also would say mine looked to have been grafted on M111, but I'm no Stephen Hayes. B118 will work well for a large expanse of wildlife orchardists.

Mortenson I'm just reporting what it says on their website.....I have no idea if they used anything different in the past

MM111 and B118 look different. MM111 is greyish brown bark and gets green leaves. B118 is purple/brown bark and red leaves. P18 can be a brownish yellow green bark. Not necessarily easy to tell after a few years but you might be able to before you plant a tree. I wouldn't be able to tell MM111 from M7 or MM106.

I have been one of the guys who had a problem with not being told what I was paying for and expressed it here. There was no reason not to tell people what rootstock their trees were on, at least I couldn't come up with a legitimate one. Glad they started sharing it, a lot of guys like the trees and they sound like a winner. I have some that I grafted last year, anxious to see how they do.

I'm nearly certain the trees that I've received from them in the past are not on B118. Regardless of rootstock, they have performed better than any other soft mast tree I've planted.

I wasn't planning on ordering more trees...but gonna give them a try. Ordered 5....seems most have liked the quality. Blue Hills is also sending me stuff this next year as well....I gotta get a few more spots cleared LOL

Knowing the rootstock, I am more comfortable buying from them. I bookmarked their website, but it seems will have to wait until 2022 to get any of their crabs. Good for them, I am glad they are doing well.
