New pond

5 year old buck +
This is a pic from one of our stands last week, I really want to put a pond in this area, have wanted to for the last couple years but haven't had the time. This is a natural low spot where the surrounding area drains too, it's wet most of the spring/summer so late summer/fall is when it'll have to be done. Guess I'll have to just do it and if it screws up our hunting for one season I guess it does. Has anyone put in or did work close to hunting season before and if you have how has it affected your hunting?

the sooner the better, get in and get it done,if you can dump some water if not expecting rain and I bet within 2 days they are drinking

Thx, I don't see this happening this year, just no time right now.

I'd do it now and not worry. Bet if have tracks in it the next day. Might be alittle wet for equipment

Sounds like your holding off for now but I thought I'd share this.

I had a guy with a dozer come in Sunday to fix one of my low crossings.

Today 4 days later I went to get some winter rye on it to hopefully help hold the soil.

I'm using deer tracks to hold my rye seed down.

I dug my pond in mid June in the woods by one of our better stands. It was similar to your low area. I think there was tracks in there from the night after I dug it. I had two different bachelor groups of bucks using the waterhole up till Oct. I swear they smell that excavated dirt and are attracted to it. Maybe some minerals in the water? I wouldn't worry about spooking them, if anything it will attract them from what I have seen. Now that my pond is a few years old it doesn't seem to have the draw it did the first year, but still always has a few tracks by it from all kinds of critters. Although my wife doesn't care much for the bears always taking a swim in it only 25 yards from her treestand. Just a suggestion keep the top rim of your pond natural, untouched. Just dig out the lower part, this will keep your drainage the way it has always been and you wont have any problems elsewhere.

I'd dig it when it's dry enough and wouldn't worry to much about it hurting anything. ..I think it would b fine.

No I didn't get this pond dug last fall, now it's a waiting game until july/aug when it's dry enough. Here's a pic from a couple weeks ago.

Put a dam across there and you'll have a fishing hole.

Looks like a great spot. I like the way the fields in the back all slope towards the valley. This should provide you with a good fresh water supply. If you put some field stone near where the water will enter the pond it will help with erosion and keep your water flowing in clean. If you leave the bottom side of the pond natural, the water can flow out there and will help it from being stagnant.
