New cams for 2021

Tamarack

5 year old buck +
Was bored so did some searching. Are there any others anyone is looking forward to? Maybe the updated DS4k for me. Or 4 of their previous model(s) if a big sale.

Stealth: a DS4K cellular that can transmit videos, and an updated DS4k with a faster trigger speed and 4k at 30fps which I think is what Browning's is.

Moultrie has a cellular one with a price and plan similar to Tactacam's: https://www.moultriefeeders.com/blog/moultrie-rolls-out-a-host-of-new-products-for-2021/

Browning's new cellular can also send vids: https://browningtrailcameras.com/products/defender-wireless-trail-camera?variant=31450841186417

Thanks for putting this together. This is a great idea.

Its obvious trail camera manufacturers are pushing cell cams. For me, I don't see people willing to pay for 4 or 5 cell plans for 4 or 5 cameras. Maybe they are anticipating the cost of cell plans to go down with am increase in 5G? Regardless, I've got to imagine that having a live stream and/or videos sent over a mobile network is going to destroy battery life. If manufacturers were smart they'd start packaging solar kits or bigger battery packs to account for this updated features.

I'm just hoping there is an increase in camera durability among the middle to lower end of manufacturers. If they're not careful, they will be passed by non name-brand cheapos from China. I bought a few last fall and this winter just to try out and I've been very impressed with video and audio quality. Who knows how long they'll last, but at half the cost of name brand cameras they are looking more and more tempting.

That reminds me of Spypoint with their free 100 pics plan. I see they have a new one out: https://www.spypoint.com/en/products/new
There are some way-out-there-middle-of-the-woods spots that would work for me- on just trails. Otherwise those pics add up too fast unless you have the cam set for a long delay. Have had good luck with their "Link", even switching it to diff cams. Lots of complaints out there but same with other brands too I guess.

I think many are just willing to pay $5 a month for extra cams especially if it's for just 4 or so months. No messing around with connecting them to each other or maybe just different locations miles apart. I think we'll be seeing more companies having discounts for more than one cam. And linking to one another.

Edit: And of course Spypoint's 4K cam only accepts up to 32GB cards. Ridiculous.

I can see the bundling of individual cell plans into cheaper packages being very appealing. I doubt if anyone else gets into linked camera networks like Cuddeback or Buckeye, though. Cheaper cell cameras are a proven technology at this point, and it's obvious the camera manufacturers are expecting the growth in the industry to happen there. If improved coverage also gets cheaper, those camera networks are going to have some stiff competition.

The higher quality cameras are pushing people to more storage, so the 32 GB minimums are kind of expected. Amazon has those cards for about the same cost as the 16 GB ($7.50).

Here is one of the cheaper cameras I bought a couple of this winter: https://www.amazon.com/Zopu-Activat...pd_rd_i=B07TL9ZF3T&psc=1&ref_=pd_bap_d_rp_1_t

Here is a sample of the video and audio quality:

The camera ran for about a month total with temps at one point below zero for around a week and recorded about 800 videos in 1080p with audio, and still had about 60% battery life left. I was impressed. I bought a couple of these for putting out on public land and will see how they do this autumn and fall.

That's not bad at all. Better than some of my cheaper Stealth's.

Spypoint's is a 32GB MAXimum. It seems all their cameras are like that.

Bushnell has a # of new ones coming out. 4k 30fps as well. Notice theirs is a max of 512GB card. I don't need one that big but probably would get those if the prices came down.

I'll be honest, I think Stealth's cameras are the worst the industry. I own 4 and seriously consider not even putting them out they are so bad.

I missed your comment on "up to". Yeah, that is pretty stupid to not allow larger cards in this day and age.

That Bushnell camera specs sound pretty solid. I will be curious to see the stock footage and reviews of it eventually.

Lol...some of those I have are that bad too. Even the G45NGMAX, while great at daytime pictures, is terrible for nighttime ones and videos day or night. I do love my DS4K's and XV4X though. I have yet to own a Browning or Bushnell.

I guess it's cellular and then 4k that they're all pushing. Boly has one as well now(and some other new cams): https://www.bolymedia.com/index/Cameras_detail/id/44

One thing I'm a bit surprised at is no new white flash/led cams, yet. Spartan did come out with one a bit ago. I'll probably get one of those or another Boly before Fall.

I would like to see some low end texting cameras with cheaper monthly plans where I could put four or five out at one time on different feeders for night time thermal hog hunting

Tactacam is making them all scramble.

That is so true. I read somewhere a new model is coming out but forget the specs, just that it may cost a bit more. All they need to do next is combine all the cams under one plan or at least up to 5 or something, or at least a big discount for each.

Tactacam is definitely driving the competition. I wouldn't be surprised if their rates creep up either this year or next though.

Not according to the Tactacam reps. Two models coming out on May 1. One the same price as last year. Lots of changes coming but not released yet.

White flash? Hopefully. When I contacted them in the beginning to request one the guy said he couldn't believe the number of requests for one. Last I heard was it/they would be black flash though.

Yep. They are nice but in my experience they miss quit a few pictures, maybe get 25% total. I would not rely on them completely.

Personally, I'm looking forward to adding another Reconyx Hyperfire 2 to my lineup.

I wonder if they are going the cuddeback route? If I understand it correctly, Cuddeback has such a specific motion detecting area because they are trying to cut down on false detections that would need to be sent over the network. I could see cell camera companies doing the same to ensure people don't feel like they are wasting their money.

Not sure. We have a Spartan - while the picture quality and detection are great, we get maybe 25%+ of the actual things that go in front of the camera. I've verified this walking / driving in front of it several times. Other brands are similar, you don't get near what is actually there vs the non-cell camera. Could be limited by the wireless networks, I'm not sure..

Sounds like the detection isn't actually that great. I think we over-estimate what most cameras are capable of detecting (or under-estimate their misses). There are definitely some trade-offs for certain camera types and their manufacturers. I know that I have about a dozen of old moultre's that are about 6-8 years old that very rarely ever miss anything (as confirmed by my own observations from the stand). The only problem is that regardless of where I have the cameras, I have to filter through about a few hundred photos of nothing. I think Cuddebacks are about the most conservative cameras and very rarely ever get false detections, but I know for a fact that they have missed deer walking in front of them. I like to think the quality and value of cameras are improving as a whole, but sometimes I wonder if we aren't just suckers that are chasing the latest and greatest.

Moultrie, poor customer service, cameras that take 100's if not 1000's of pics of nothing but tree shadows.

I wonder how cams with side sensors compare with detecting %'s. I guess they may have more blank pics unless set up for something flying by. May make more sense for videos.
