I've been cutting up a fallen shagbark hickory tree and I keep seeing a lot of these. Any idea what they are and if they are a problem?

Oh, I have those too.
And I think they are doing some damage to the MAM. I have seen some major leaf damage...I assume from the weevils.
I still have the stuff but it seems to be on the down swing on my property. I can't speak about the surrounding area, though...haven't been out and about checking out the neighbors place.

And he is self educated (correct??). Its not like he has a masters or doctorate on this stuff.

LOL, and funny you should mention him. All he hunts any more is coyotes and crows. It had been months since he had seen a coyote, and he was starting to get in a bad mood. Well....yesterday he saw one and shot at it. He saw it go down, but then immediately it was standing back up in the same spot. He jacked in another shell and fired again. When he went down to the spot, he had killed two coyotes. He was a happy camper for sure.
