My fall mushroom season

Telemark

5 year old buck +
It has begun. Decent haul the first day. Over three pounds for sure. Today we got about two inches of rain, so I'm planning another trip Saturday.

Mostly porcini, some chanterelles and russulas, and a couple hedgehogs and funnel chants.

Those look great! We found a few morels this spring but not a single chant all summer long! I've tried to find some hen of the woods but never seem to time it right. I either go out and find nothing, or go out and find a few remains that are way past eating stage.

People were finding chants all summer in Ohio. I found none in Ontario this year, but last year was the best I have ever seen for chants there.

You can cultivate hen of the woods from what i understand. I started a personal use mushroom farm this summer. I started small with shiitake and grey oyster mushrooms.

It’s been amazing in Northern Indiana. Heavy rains lead to heavy hauls!

nice kings. We did really well on chants in N WI this weekend. Along with some cinni bars and a few hedgehogs.

I’m really stunned by the size of the chants that I’m picking-went out yesterday after 3” of rain in two days. With all that rain and temps near 90, it was a mushroom wonderland.

What are you doing with them? Favorite way to eat them?

I dry sauté and pickle a couple of gallons each summer, and really enjoy the oohs and ash’s at the holidays when the go on a relish tray. Throughout the season I fry them up with every steak, put them in every omelet, and I just love a very light dusting of Drake’s batter mix, and dropped into butter!
I’m going to go cook some right now!

Ended up with 16 lbs of porcini this weekend. Froze about half, and dehydrating the other half.

I’m going to the UP in a few weeks- do you think they’ll still be growing?

I'm in Norway now. Sorry for the confusion. But last year I found porcini in the Great Lakes area this time of year. Just be careful with bitter bolete. They look legit, but they taste horrible.

Thanks for the link, Boletes are fascinating. Honestly, the last time I was there we were so busily harvesting bear’s head tooth and Chaga we didn’t really have time to mess around with much else. Good problems to have!

Porcini season is over. Focusing on mid-autumn mushrooms now. Funnel chanterels and hedgehogs are looking good. A few late boletes in the mix as well.

What is this one? I found it where we just clear cut a bunch of trees. No plan to eat it but the top looks like a morel.20181006_102942.jpg20181006_102946.jpg
