A pair of these popped up in our horse pasture. Anyone know what kind these are and if they're edible?

Look like puff balls. Reportedly edible while small. I've never tried one. Fun to kick and stomp on.

Thanks guys. Guess I'll wait and see how big they get.

Definitely want to eat when still firm / with white flesh on the inside. Any discoloration and it's past prime (wait long enough it will just be filled with dark spores / stomp them then they're like smoke bombs).

One of the safest to eat as they're so easily identified/ shouldn't have any stem structure inside, nor do they have any visible gills.

I've just had them sliced about 1/2" wide with the slices battered and pan fried. It's definitely edible but I wouldn't fight over it.

Quite a few interesting recipes here you could try....

BE CAREFUL with that one! I don't like the way it looks. All the edible puffballs I find are pure white. That has a off color. I bet if you cut that one open it is black inside. Black = poison, I think it would throw up a red flag. I'm going with pigskin puffball or poison puffball.

Not taking chances with any mushroom when the best case scenario seems to be edible but not tasty.

I have seen too many close calls with people and mushrooms. With mushrooms, pickers should not only no what ones are edible, but also the bad " look alike's" of the good ones. The difference between them can be miniscule. Puffballs are a good beginner cause they are easy to identify. If they are white inside they are good, black are poison. If you ask me they taste like a piece of wet cardboard. I always shake my head when someone tells me the like them.

Definitely puffball... one of the easiest and safest for novices to identify.
Not all puffballs are white on the outside. I have at least two different species that are common here - one like the one pictured, with that brown, reticulated skin. Inside should be solid white, like a piece of white bread. If you're starting to see some color change in the flesh - yellow/green/purple/black... discard them. Not toxic, but not tasty at that stage.
As mentioned earlier, they don't have much flavor, but sauteed in butter or bacon grease... they're OK... better than no mushrooms.
