Mushroom Sightings 2015

SD51555

5 year old buck +
On another site, a poster reported finding morels in Ottertail County yesterday. I haven't found any yet. Still bone dry in all my spots.

Went out on some public ground in Sauk county and found 8 of the grey mushrooms. Talked to a few guys and it seems to be hit and miss. Some have said they have found a ton while some haven't found any.

I went out yesterday Racine county in a poor area, and found two small ones. I'm going to check again Monday.

I found some! Cass county, May 8th. It was almost bare dirt where we had burned some thatch last summer in our food plot. Found total of 6, all in the burned edges of our plot.

I just read in one of my books that talks about how they will thrive after forest fires. In some places the burn just to produce morels. I went out today I found 3 blacks and 16 yellows that were at the very end of being salvageable. All the yellows were under one tree, couldn't find another in that whole woods.

Been hearing the same from my brother back home. Not much happening this year. We just got our first good rain over the weekend.

Never seen a morel mushroom at my homes once I moved in 16 years ago. I burned a small area in front of my bee hives last year and again this year. In a 10 for circle I got 2 gallons of morels last weekend. Can't believe just how tasty they are

Nice!!

I'm making my last venture in southern MN today. Hoping this rain and mild weather gets something going finally.

Were they grays or yellows?

I would be burning that whole every year if it produced like that.

Here's yestday's haul. Or shall I say scavenge?

Found my first pheasant back. This one was new to me and not even on my bucket list. Thanks to Ruskbucks, I figured out what these were. We found a sweet spot that had multiple of these. I believe we found some from last year, as well as some rotten ones from this year already. It's hard to say. Seemed like we found some that were dried rock hard, and others that were fall apart mushy. Can't say we nailed the ID on the ones that were not prime. We found all three of the good ones growing on standing dead elm trees.

My poor morel performance continues. Here's number 9 and 10 for the season.

Cut up, cooked, and divided three ways, the shrooms didn't go far.

Here's a wild card. Anyone got a clue about what these are? Not tripping any edible triggers for me, but saw lots of them yesterday.

I found 5 more today in a new spot. 3 grays, 2 yellows, The one yellow is huge. I haven't hunted morels that much. I thought they would be more scattered throughout the woods. Is this typical, one spot will hold a lot and the rest of the area there is none

Those look like inky caps to me.When they are fresh they should have a domed cap. They seem to only last for a day or two. They are in the same family as shaggy manes. Some are edible, some are toxic. I stay away from those. The only ink cap that is easily to identify is the shaggy mane. Did you ever have those? There is a alcohol inky cap mushroom that is totally safe to eat, but if you consume alcohol with in 3 days of eating one you will get really sick. It always amazes me the strange things associated with mushrooms.

Each year, we only find morels in one or two spots. Sometimes those spots produce big, and other times (like this year) there's not much to go around.

I've heard of inky caps before, but I haven't pursued them because of the risk of a bad ID. I have heard of shaggy manes and they are on my list. Those seem to pretty safe in terms of ID. I haven't seen any in a few years, but in hindsight, I had them right in front of me.

I'm heading back up to the hunting land on Tuesday night. I'm hoping there may be some late bloomers in the food plot yet.

Just enough to get ya hooked!

Just a tip on those shaggy manes, you have to eat them almost right away. They will turn to a inky mush shortly after they are picked. I know a guy who drove 45 minutes picked a ton of them, put them in a brown bag and by the time they got home they were all junk. They are pretty good though. I'm lucky enough they pop up in our yard in the fall. A few days ago the inky caps came up almost in the same spot as I picked the shaggys last fall.

Speaking of shaggy manes, they are coming up around my apartment building. Wouldn't you know it, it's on the side where all the dogs walk and p*$$. I picked a few to hang onto overnight. I'm hoping they are ok yet in the morning. If not, there are more coming up and it looks like there will be a half dozen for each of the next few days.

I just have to confirm with the landlord they haven't done any spraying in the last couple weeks and get some encouragement here that these are in fact shaggy manes. I'm 99% confident they are.

I split the middle one open to show the guts. I believe you on the short shelf life. There were some there past prime that looked like zombie goo already.

We eat them sauteed in butter with just salt and pepper, coupled with 3/8" thick venison tenderloin medallions. Cook the mushrooms until they are almost done and then add the loins for about 2 minutes on the first side and flip for about 1 more minute until the center has just a bit of pink throughout and I haven't found anything I would call a better use for either ingredient. I wish that the morel and "tenderloin" season were at the same time of year, just so I could try them both "fresh" and not have to freeze the tenderloin for 6 months until the morels come into season.

SD those have me worried a little bit. They sure look like shaggys, but they look really small. The ones I find are usually 3-6 inches tall and purple in color. (although I have seen the brownish color in pics). I have also only found them in late summer into fall after rains. I found in a book that that the shaggy mane when cut turns a salmon pink color before it turns black on the inside, this is the only inky cap mushroom that does this.If it does you should be good. It looks in your pic that it might be turning that color. There might be a difference in variations in them coming from se WI and MN. I can't find any look alikes for your pics. It said they shaggy mane is the only inky cap that is cylindrical in shape, which yours are. I would sue think they are shaggys but I couldn't go as high as the 99%. Be safe, if possible if you are going to try them maybe just try one first. I just sauté them in butter. They shrink a lot, remind me of a morel in texture, but have a almost sweet flavor.
