mushroom id?

My helper on the farm was driving along the East line of my land in southern Portage county WI. He found a HUGE mushroom that was growing on the West side of an oak tree. Sent me a pic of it with a soda can for a size comparison. It looked to be the size of a volley ball. It had an orange tint to it and was mostly white. He called it a "chicken" mushroom. Said it was extremely edible. Anyone know what I am talking about? Where do I look for them on my land?

Best thing you could do is just post that picture, would make it much easier.

Google laetiporus sulphureus, chicken of the woods, or sulfur shelf.

Here’s a bunch I found, about two weeks too late. I only managed to save a few chunks, as you can see it has faded from brilliant orange to tan. Hopefully this log will fruit again next year.

That is exactly what my helper found on my land. He was excited as it was in great condition. He was making plans to cook and eat it with his family.

It’s really quite good. I’ve been sautéing strips in butter, then throwing in a dash of Louisiana Hot Sauce to make buffalo chicken mushroom wings!
